MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES

REVIEW PROBLEMS

1. A national high school flagpole is constructed with a steel pipe pole 6 inches in diameter.
The pole is attached to its foundation by a ball-and-socket joint and is supported in the
upright position by four 0.25 in. diameter high-strength steel wires, as shown in Fig. 1.
When there is no wind, the tension in the wires is negligible. In a sudden downpour, the
wind blows hard from the south, and its effects can be represented by a horizontal force of
900 lb. at the mid-height of the pole. Estimate how far the top of the pole moves from its
original position, which is perpendicular to the base.

2. A kingpost truss with loads given is shown in the figure. The truss material is steel, which
has a Young's modulus of 10 × 106 psi. All the outer members of the truss have a cross-
sectional area of 4 in.2, and each of the three inner members has an area of 2 in. 2. Which
member will not have a change in length due to the loads shown?

3. A hoop of internal radius r, thickness t, and width b is subjected to a uniform pressure p

(psi) over the entire internal surface, as shown in Fig. 1. A view looking down the axis of
the ring is sketched in Fig. 2. Determine the deformation of the ring due to the internal
pressure.

4. A machine element is connected at the left end and is subjected to axial loads as shown.
Compute the axial stress in the bar. The area of the bar is 1.125 x 10-3 m2.

5. An aluminum bar AB is attached to its support at A by a pin of diameter 16 mm. The bar has
a thickness of 15 mm and a width of 40 mm. If the allowable tensile stress in the bar is 150
MPa and the allowable shear stress in the pin is 85 MPa, find the allowable load P.

6. A steel loop ABCD of length 1.2 m and of 10-mm diameter is placed as shown around a 24-
mm-diameter aluminum rod AC. Cables BE and DF, each of 12-mm diameter, are used to
apply the load Q. Knowing that the ultimate strength of the steel used for the loop and the
cables is 480 MPa and that the ultimate strength of the aluminum used for the rod is 260
MPa, determine the largest load Q that can be applied if an overall factor of safety of 3 is
desired.

7. A uniform bar of length L, cross-sectional A, and a unit mass ρ is suspended vertically from
one end. If the total mass of the bar is M, what is the total elongation?
8. A homogeneous prismatic bar is loaded by forces P 1, P2, and P3 acting at points B, C, and D,
respectively. The dimensions of the bar are as follows: a = 1.0 m, b = 0.4 m, and c = 0.6 m.
Assuming that P2 = 15 kN and P3 = 9 kN, determine the force P1 so that the lower end D of
the bar does not move vertically when the loads are applied.

9. Two cylindrical rods, one of steel and the other of brass, are joined at C and restrained by
rigid supports at A and E. For the loading shown and knowing that Es = 200 GPa and Eb =
105 GPa, determine a) the reactions at A and E, b) the deflection of point C.

10. A thin plate is in a state of plane stress and has dimensions of 8 in. in the x direction and 4
in. in the y direction. The plate increases in length in the x direction by 0.0016 in. and
decreases in the y direction by 0.00024 in. Compute x and y to cause these
deformations. E = 29 x 106 psi and v = 0.30.

11. A 1.2-m concrete post is reinforced by four steel bars, each of 18-mm diameter. Knowing
that Es = 200 GPa, s = 11.7 x 10-6/ºC and Ec = 25 GPa, c = 9.9 x 10-6/ºC, determine the
normal stresses induced in the steel and in the concrete by a temperature rise of 27ºC.

12. A solid steel shaft 5 m long is stressed to 80 MPa when twisted through 4°. Using G = 83
GPa, compute the shaft diameter. What power can be transmitted by the shaft at 20 Hz?
13. The plate shown in the figure is fastened to the fixed member by five 10-mm-diameter
rivets. Compute the value of the loads P so that the average shearing stress in any rivet
does not exceed 70 MPa.

14. Two vertical forces are applied to a beam of the cross section shown. Determine the
maximum tensile and compressive stresses in portion BC of the beam.

15. For the beam and loading shown, determine the maximum normal stress due to bending on
a transverse section at C.

16. For the beam and loading shown, determine the maximum normal stress due to bending.
The section modulus for the section is 2400 x 103 mm3.

17. Determine the maximum height h of the beam shown if the flexural stress is not to exceed
20 MPa.

18. For the beam and loading shown, determine the maximum normal stress due to bending.

19. A steel bar (Es = 210 GPa) and an aluminum bar (Ea = 70 GPa) are bonded together to form
the composite bar shown. Determine the maximum stress in the aluminum and the steel
when the bar is bent about a horizontal axis, with M = 60 N-m.

20. Two wood beams, each of square cross section (3.5 in. × 3.5 in., actual dimensions) are
glued together to form a solid beam of dimensions 3.5 in. × 7.0 in. The beam is simply
supported with a span of 6 ft. What is the maximum load Pmax that may act at the midpoint if
CE 521 | CIVIL ENGINEERING REVIEW 6
the allowable shear stress in the glued joint is 200 psi? (Include the effects of the beam’s
own weight, assuming that the wood weighs 0.02 lb/in 3.
