Style 387I is the proven non-asbestos heir for asbestos packing Style
187I. It is recommended for high temperature, high pressure to 297
Bar applications, and complies with API Code 682 and 607. It utilizes a
proprietary yarn (exclusive in packings from John Crane) developed by
STYLE 387I NASA for dependable performance in high temperature services. Style
387I offers greater leakage control and longer service and costs far
less than specialty non-asbestos packings. It also requires less torque to
achieve effective sealing.

This packing is designed to retard pitting of 300 and 400 stainless steel
stems, and contains a special sacrificial metal that prevents electrolytic
action from taking place.

A non-hardening core material assures extended service life and has

unique resiliency that improves sealability. Inconel-inserted wire enables
this packing to handle higher pressures (hydrostatically tested to 530
Bar) the wire is completely covered to reduce stem scoring. The proven,
patented corrosion inhibitor retards valve stem pitting. Graphite is
impregnated into the packing and the finished product is immersed in
graphite. The braided yarn retains its superior performance capabilities
throughout the recommended temperature range.
