PRE-CALCULUS: DON’T BE IRRATIONAL

The word might be frightening, but this course will make calculus far
less complicated than you thought it would be. Use this class to prepare
yourself for what’s to come in high school calculus classes. Topics to
be covered include equations, inequalities, functions and their graphs,
polynomial and rational functions, analytic geometry and complex
numbers. Sounds like Swahili, but really its just a numbers game!

PSYCHOLOGY: FREUDIAN FRENZY

Do you dream about mermaids and wonder why? Is some of your
“abnormal” behavior actually “normal?” This class examines the
major theories of human behavior, exploring experimental methods
and testing that psychologists use to study it. Discover what role
the brain plays in everyday situations, during sleep, on drugs and in
emergencies. Understand how psychologists classify and explain
various types of problems, and discuss their recommended therapies.

PUBLIC SPEAKING: SPEAK YOUR MIND

Someone once said that people are more afraid of public speaking
than death. With that in mind, learning to speak publicly will have a
greater impact on your education than any other skill. In this class,
you will learn to prepare and present a public address. We will discuss
different methods of addressing an audience, depending on the
situation, as well as many types of speeches (ie: Personal Statement
speech, Pet Peeve speech, Demonstration speech, Informative/
Explanatory speech and others). All students will not only present
their own work but will also be required to provide thoughtful and
comprehensive critiques on their classmates’ work. Who knows?
You might even learn to enjoy it!

Study Programs! Twice daily, one of our designated
Medical Coordinators will escort any ill students to the
on-campus University Health Center for physician attended
medical attention. Our Medical Coordinators act as a liaison
and will contact parents prior to treatment, if necessary,
and/or as soon as a student has been discharged from the
health center to update them on a student’s diagnosis,
progress, and/or other important information. Communication
is key…to that end, a Medical form (sent to you in the spring)
must be completed and signed by both the parent/guardian
and physician prior to the start of the summer and will be
kept in the health center with insurance and emergency
contact information.
All Middle School Enrichment students live in one dedicated
residence hall along with our staff advisors and directors (on
duty 24/7). By living together, we are able to provide for the
safety and security of all our students. Access to all
residence hall entrances at Penn State are electronically
controlled and all visitors must be announced. Our Summer
Study office is located on the main level of the residence hall,
allowing us to visibly monitor students, staff and visitors.
Students are free to walk the beautiful Penn State campus
but are required to be in small groups with a Staff Advisor if
going into town.

The Residence Hall and Your Room

Each room is equipped with the comforts of home in
spacious, furnished doubles (2 students per room). For
best possible roommate matching, we carefully review
“Roommate Survey” forms completed by students in the
spring. Matching is done by pairing same gender/age/grade
students who respond similarly to various hobby, habit-
oriented, and like/dislike type questions. Each room has
2 beds, 2 desks, 2 dressers, 2 closets, 2 chairs and even
a refrigerator, freezer and microwave oven! Washers and
dryers are on every other floor and staff will be happy to
“give lessons” to first-timers.
Social time is important…to foster friendships and
growth, our dorms are equipped with recreation rooms
(i.e. billiards, foosball, ping pong), TV rooms (nightly
movies and competitive gaming tournaments) and lounges
(discussion groups, crafts, board games). Your residence
hall this summer will be your home, away from home!
