Candid Composer
A few words about the character of the great composer. As his friends and family pointed out,
Pyotr was rather sensitive, delicate, and impressionable. His gentle and friendly nature had
attracted a lot of people and he was able to remain friends even with those who
fundamentally disagreed with his musical and political ideas. Unfortunately, Tchaikovsky
suffered from nervous disorders and was often visited by thoughts of suicide. The reason for
this was his sexual orientation. Trying to conquer nature, Tchaikovsky married a twenty year-
old girl who loved him sincerely but for obvious reasons, the marriage could bring nothing but
heartache and misery. His departure overseas in 1878 was seen by many as an attempt to
escape from himself.
