CULTURAL INSIGHT
Karl Bryullov
The real name of the artist's father was Paul Brullo. When his two sons were born, the
decision of the father, Academician of the Art Academy, was firm: the children must be artists.
To barely grown up Karl, his strict father bought pencils and he was forced to practice every
day. "Until there are twenty horses drawn, there will be no breakfast for you!" Karl was
growing up restless. He did not want to paint and once his father even hit the boy on the head
for a failed painting task. The hit was so hard that Karl could not hear with his right ear for the
rest of his life. To hear better he always tilted his head. This tilt is visible on his self-portrait but
it radiates a special charm that only Karl had.
The Academy students often asked Karl to correct their works to get the highest grades. The
price for one work was a cheesecake!
After a brilliant graduation from the Academy of Arts, Brullo was sent for training to Italy. It was
then when by the decree of the emperor the letter "v" was added to his last name to sound
more Russian. This is how Karl Pavlovich Bryullov appeared.
