Module 1

Discuss the concept of rotating magnetic field produced in a 3-phase induction motor
A 1200V, 50Hz star connected induction motor has a star-connected slip-ring rotor with a
transformation ratio of 3.75. The rotor resistance per phase is 0.016 Ω and leakage
inductance of 0.8mH Per phase. Neglect stator impedance. Find:
i) Rotor starting current per phase with slip rings short circuited.
ii) The rotor Power factor at starting.
iii) The external resistance per phase required to obtain a starting 2current of 125A in the
stator.
iv) The rotor current at 4% slip.
v) The rotor Power factor at 4% slip.
Compare the squirrel cage and wound 3-Phase induction motor with reference to
construction , performance and applications.

Compare the squirrel cage and slip ring induction motor and draw the diagram of these
motor
Distinguish the two types of rotor in 3 phase induction motor with a neat diagram

Select a proper method to produce a rotating magnetic field in a 3 phase induction motor
with vectorial representation

Derive a ratio for full load torque to maximum torque in terms of slip.

Summarize an equation for torque of induction motor and the condition for maximum

The three phase, 4 pole, 50 HZ,7.4 KW motor at rated voltage and frequency has a
starting torque of 150% and maximum torque at 200% of full load torque. Estimate the
value of i) Full-load speed ii)Speed at maximum torque

Justify the condition to produce the rotating magnetic field 3-phase induction motor
with necessary representation.
Write an equation for torque of induction motor and the condition for maximum torque.
A 4 pole, 50 HZ, 3-φ induction motor develops a maximum torque of 110 N-m at 1360
rpm. The resistance of the star-connected rotor is 0.25Ω∕phase. Simplify the value of
resistance that must be inserted in series , with each rotor phase to produce a starting
torque equal to half the maximum torque
Analyze the characteristic of 3-φ induction motor in generating , motoring and braking
region

Describe the phenomenon of crawling of 3-φ induction motor

Evaluate the performance of no load test and blocked rotor test with suitable diagram
and equations

Develop the circle diagram for a 5.5 KW,400V,3 φ ,50 HZ , 4 pole , slip ring induction
motor from the test data given below(Line Values)
No Load Test: 400V, 6A , 0.085 pf lagging
Blocked Rotor test: 100V, 12A , 700W
The ratio of primary to secondary turns is 2.6,stator resistance per phase is 0.67Ω and
that of rotor is 0.18 Ω
.From the diagram find
i)Full load current ii) Full load Slip iii)Ratio of maximum torque to full load torque iv)

Blocked Rotor Test; 180V 45A 5799W
Calculate the line current and power factor when operating 4% Slip .The stator resistance
per phase is 0.5 Ω
Explain about Cogging and Crawling of induction motor
The core loss in a 3-Phase induction motor is 100W and equals the mechanical loss,
the stator copper loss is 120W when developing 1500W at shaft output. Evaluate the
efficiency of machine .Assume the slip as 4%.
A 25hp , 400V, 50 Hz, 4-Pole star connected induction motor has the following
impedances per phase in ohms referred to stator side:
RS=0.641 , Rr=0.332 , Xs=1.106 , Xr=0.464 and Xmag=26.30
Rotational losses are assumed constant and are 1.1 KW and core losses are assumed
negligible. If slip is 2.2% at rated voltage and frequency. Find
i)Speed

iii)Power factor
iv)Output and input Power
v)Efficiency of motor

Stator resistance per phase is 0.67Ω and the rotor is 0.185Ω.Calculate i)Full load

Describe the working of Shaded pole induction motor with neat diagram

Explain in detail the need of a auto transformer starter and state its advantages and
disadvantages with neat diagram

A 1 ∕ 4 hp , split –phase motor draws its starting winding current of 4A lagging the supply
voltage by 15 degree electrical and its running winding current is 6A lagging by 40 degree
electrical. Calculate
i)The total current and power Factor
ii)The Component of starting winding current in phase with supply voltage
iii)The phase angle between the starting and running winding currents
iv)The Component of running winding current that lags the supply voltage by 90 o
Describe the working of capacitor start phase induction motor with neat diagram

Module 4

1. A 1000 KVA, 4600 V star connected alternator is short circuited when it is operating at
rated speed .The field excitation is adjusted to give 150% of the rated current in the
armature .The short circuit is then removed with the same field current and speed , the
open circuit voltage between stator line terminals is found to be 1744 Volts. The
effective resistance per phase of the armature is 1.2 Ω. Calculate the percentage
regulation of full load and power factors of 0.8 lag and 0.8 lead, by EMF Method

2. Analyze the effect of armature reaction of alternator at i) Zero lagging power factor loads
ii)Zero leading power factor loads
3. Evaluate the steps required to draw ZPF method using potier triangle
4. Predict a method to find voltage regulation when the field winding is open in an
alternator and explain the regulation in steps
5. Derive an EMF equation of an alternator with pitch factor and distribution factor taken
into consideration.
6. Develop the synchronous impedance , reactance of single phase alternator and the
terminal potential difference when a load of 250A at 6.6 KV at lagging pf of 0.8 in
which a field current produces an armature current of 250A , on short circuit and a
generated emf of 50V on open circuit, armature resistance is 2.0Ω

A Field current of 20 A is found necessary to circulate full load current on short
circuiting the armature. Calculate by m.m.f method, the full load regulation at 0.8 P.f
lag. Neglect armature resistance and leakage reactance

8. Analyze with suitable steps to draw the Phasor diagram of alternator at leading Power
factor loads.
9. Evaluate the steps required to draw ZPF method using potier triangle
10. A Salient pole alternator has direct axis and quadrature axis reactance of 0.8 p.u and
0.5 P.u respectively ,effective resistance Ra=0.02 p.u .Compute percentage regulation
when the generator is delivering rated load at 0.8 P.f lag and lead .Assume rated
voltage and rated current as one per unit
11. Analyze the effect of armature reaction of alternator at lagging zero power factors with
suitable diagram.

1. Evaluate the condition for the effect of load on synchronous motor


2. Investigate the reason why synchronous motor is not self-starting.

4. Formulate the condition for parallel operation of Alternator
5. Analyze the effect of load at constant field excitation of a synchronous motor
6. Derive an output expression for power output of salient pole alternator

7. Discuss any three application of synchronous motor and the method for reducing
hunting.
8. Two similar alternators display the following data:
3-Phase, 6600V ,50Hz , 1000KVA,

When operating in parallel with a terminal voltage of 6600V the first alternator supplies
85 amps at a P.f of 0.85 lagging .If the load power factor is 0.78 lagging and total load
is 1500 KW, compute the excitation of second alternator.
