SCIENCE
EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

Directions for the User

Here are some reminders to guide as you go through this module:
1. Read and follow each directions carefully;
2. Answer the pre-test before proceeding to the activity;
3. Take down notes and record points for clarification;
4. Always aim to get at least 80% of the total number of items given;
5. Be sure to answer the post test at the end of the module.

Introduction
The continuity of life and survival of each species is dependent on reproduction.
Reproduction is a biological process in which an organism give rise to young ones similar to
itself. In plant, asexual reproduction involves the participation of one organism without the
involvement of gametes. It has two types named as natural vegetative propagation (the growth
of a new plant from a stem, leaf, or root) and artificial vegetative propagation (the process of
propagating plants trough artificial methods).

Competency: 1. Describe the different ways of how plants reproduce

S11/12LT -IIej-13

Objectives:
1. Match the plant given to its reproductive parts/ mode of reproduction.
2. Classify as natural vegetative propagation and artificial vegetative propagation.

Procedure / Learning Experience

A. Engage
Students are asked to draw and label the parts of a plant in the space given.

Guide questions:
1. What are the parts of the plant?
2. As based from their structure what do you think are their function?
3. Do you think that each part of the plant play a role in its process of
reproduction?

Students are asked to work on activity 1.

Activity 1 Vegetative Propagation

Natural Vegetative Propagation is an asexual reproduction used in agriculture and

horticulture to propagate a desirable plant naturally through the use of stems, roots and leaves.

Arrange the jumbled word to reveal the reproductive structure used in natural vegetative
propagation. Write the answer on the space below the grid.
 Long slender stem that grows along
N S O T L O S the surface of the soil also known as
stolon
 mint, bermuda grass

 Underground stems and has node that

S E M O Z I H R can give rise to new flowering shoot.
 Grass, sedges banana suckers

 Swollen underground plant stem that

S R O M C serves as a storage organ use to
survive winter or drought and heat
 gladiolus, taro

 short stem with fleshy leaves that

L B U B function for food storage organs during
dormancy
 onion, leek, tulip

 enlarge area of the root and function

U T E B R for food storage during winter
and drought
 potato, yam

E N N U R U  long thin stem that grows horizontally

along the ground and produces roots
and shoots
 strawberries

Artificial Vegetative Propagation is an asexual reproduction that utilize artificial methods

to propagate plants.

 a piece of a stem, leaf, or root which is

G N I T T U C capable of growing into a new plant
 sugarcane, sampaguita

 process where a branch is exposed to

N G E Y A L R I the soil, allowed to form roots, and then
separated from the parent plant
 trees, shrubs, herbaceous plant

R A G T F I N G  The process of transplanting living

tissue from one plant to another.
 navel oranges

D. Elaborate
Bauang is a first class municipality in the province of La Union. It is popular to its famous
falls, river, beaches, ruins and grape farms.
Lambong Grape Farm is said to be one of the fine vineyard and known for its luscious
grapes and delicious wine. The grape farm was founded by Avelino Lamboy in 1972 who is
known as the “Philippine King of Grapes” and stared planting grapes through stem cutting.
Do you think grape farms is possible in our province? Why?

2. The roots are responsible for the absorption of water and anchorage in the soil, leaves are
responsible for photosynthesis, stem support the leaves and conduct water, minerals and sugar
in the plant while flower is the reproductive structure of the plant.
3. All plant part play a role in reproduction: roots, stem and leaves for sexual reproduction while
flower is for sexual reproduction.
