What is a UPEU?

The universal power and environment interface unit (UPEU) is a power module used
for converting -48 V input power into +12 V DC power and then distributing the
power to other boards in a BBU.
A UPEU board can be used in any radio system. A BBU3900 or BBU3910 must be
configured with a UPEU board. At least one UPEU board and a maximum of two
UPEU boards can be configured in a BBU3900 or BBU3910. In addition, a UPEU
board must be configured in slot 18 or 19.

For details, see section "UPEU" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the functions and working principle of a UPEU board?

A UPEU board converts -48 V DC input power into +12 V DC power and provides two
ports with each transmitting one channel of RS485 signals and another two with each
transmitting four channels of Boolean signals.
The working principle of a UPEU board is shown in the following figure.

For details, see section "UPEU" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the types of UPEU boards?
From SRAN9.0 onwards, UPEU boards are classified into the following types:
UPEUa
UPEUc
UPEUd
Different UPEU boards have different appearances.
A UPEUc and a UPEUd have labels indicating their board types on the upper right
corners of them, whereas a UPEUa does not have such a label.
The power port on a UPEUc or UPEUd is a 3V3 port, whereas that on a UPEUa is a
7W2 port.
The silkscreen above the power port on a UPEUc or UPEUd describes both voltage
and current values, whereas that on a UPEUa describes only a voltage value.

For details, see section "UPEU" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the meanings of "8A" and "15A"on the panels of a UPEUc and a
UPEUd?
The silkscreen "8A" on a UPEUc panel indicates the rated current of a UPEUc, and the
silkscreen "15A" on a UPEUd panel indicates the rated current of a UPEUd.
For details, see section "UPEU" in BBU Hardware Description.

What is the output power of a UPEU board? Is 1+1 backup supported when two
UPEU boards are configured?
Different types of UPEU boards have different output power. The following table lists the
output power of UPEU boards.
Board Output Power Backup Mode
UPEUa The output power of a UPEUa board is 300 W. 1+1 backup
UPEUc The output power of a UPEUc board is 360 W, and In 1+1 backup mode, th
the output power of two UPEUc boards is 650 W. of two UPEUc boards is
UPEUd The output power of a UPEUd board is 650 W. 1+1 backup
For details, see section "UPEU" in BBU Hardware Description.

Why does the preceding table not list the output power when different types of
UPEU boards are configured in a BBU, such as UPEUa+UPEUc and
UPEUc+UPEUd?
Note that a BBU cannot house two UPEU boards of different types, that is, such
configurations as UPEUc+UPEUa and UPEUc+UPEUd are not supported. Currently,
the maximum output power of UPEU boards is provided by the UPEUc+UPEUc
configuration.
For details, see section "UPEU" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the functions of Ethernet ports on a UPEU panel?
A UPEU board provides four monitoring/alarm ports to transmit two channels of RS485
signals and eight channels of Boolean signals.
The following table lists the mapping between ports and signals to be monitored.
Silkscreen Connector Description
EXT-ALM0 RJ45 connector Port for Boolean signal inputs 0 to 3
EXT-ALM1 RJ45 connector Port for Boolean signal inputs 4 to 7
MON0 RJ45 connector Port for RS485 signal input 0
MON1 RJ45 connector Port for RS485 signal input 1
For details, see section "UPEU" in BBU Hardware Description.

What are the relationships between line orders of the alarm cable and Boolean
signals?
An alarm cable is an Ethernet cable with an RJ45 connector at each end. The following
table lists the mapping between the line orders of the EXT-ALM0 and EXT-ALM1 ports
and the Boolean signals.

Cable" in 3900 Series Base Station Cables.

If the power required by a BBU exceeds the power supported by the configured
UPEU board after baseband processing boards are added to the BBU, how
should we adjust the configurations of UPEU boards?
If one UPEUa is configured for the original BBU, replace the UPEUa with two UPEUc
boards to meet the current power requirement.
If one UPEUc is configured for the original BBU, add a UPEUc to achieve the
maximum configuration.
If one UPEUc and one UEIU are configured for the original BBU, replace the UEIU
with a UPEUc.
If two UPEUa boards, or one UPEUa and one UEIU are configured for the original
BBU, replace the boards with two UPEUc boards.
For details, see section "Adding a UPEU" in the corresponding site maintenance guide.
