Journal #2: The 8 Keys to Great Health!

Apply these simple principles in your life and you will significantly increase your health and
wellbeing!

1. This is all about putting great quality fresh alive foods into your body.

Make sure a large proportion (ideally 50-70%) of your diet is fresh/raw fruit and vegetables. Eat a variety
of foods and cut down on red meats. Avoid fried foods, fatty foods. TIP: Eating slowly causes saliva to aid
the digestion process which results in better absorption of vitamins and minerals and also less stress.

2. Keeping active is a key requirement for good health.

Your body needs at least 30 minutes of exercise three times per week. “Those who cannot find time for
exercise will have to find time for illness” TIP: Arranging set times each week to exercise with a friend or
spouse will make sure you do not miss out.

3. Our bodies need 8 glasses (2 Litres) of pure water a day.

Tea, coffee, juice, flavoured waters do not count! TIP: Have a sipper bottle with you all day – that way it
is beside you when you need it and you can make sure you are getting 8 glasses (2 Litres) a day. Have 2
glasses of water with a squeeze of lemon first thing
in the morning to clear out your system.

4. The sun has many healing and rejuvenating properties.

You feel so good when you get some sunshine. Experts believe we need at least 10 minutes of sun on our
arms as a minimum per day! TIP: If you are every unwell or sick see what a difference half an hour out in
the sun makes.

5. Temperance is a word that means having balance in the good things of life and
avoiding the bad things in life.

We all know that drugs, cigarettes and alcohol are bad for our health. Our bodies are much better off if we
minimise or avoid them altogether! TIP: If you want to quit any bad habit you need to support and
encouragement of a spouse or a close friend.

6. Good clean air is necessary for your body.

Breath deeply and slowly. Many people are fast shallow breathers. The optimal number of breaths per
minute is around 6-10. If you breathe faster than this you need to focus on slowing down. As much as
possible get out into the county and breath fresh, clean air. TIP: Sleep with the window open and you will
get a better nights sleep. Take 10 big breaths when you get up in the morning to oxygenate
your blood!

7. Most people generally need 8 hours per night.

If you are not waking feeling refreshed and rested you need to get to bed earlier. A consistent sleep
pattern is good for the body – the same time to bed each night. TIP: Some experts say the hours before
midnight are worth double for sleep. Get to bed earlier if you can.

Make sure that you go to bed each night free from stress and worry. If not, deal with the issues. If you

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Provides Better Data For Evaluation

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX), widely used by lung specialists, helps


manage heart disease, particularly in those with chronic heart failure, according
to a new American Heart Association scientific statement.

CPX is a non-invasive and objective method to evaluate heart and lung function.
It provides physicians data on gas exchanges in the lungs at rest and during
exercise and yields breath-by-breath measures of oxygen uptake. Combining
these findings with data traditionally obtained by cardiologists from treadmill or
bicycle tests - such as heart rate, blood pressure and electrocardiogram changes
- provides information that can yield a more comprehensive evaluation, said
Gary J. Balady, M.D., professor of medicine at Boston University and chair of the
expert panel that wrote the statement.

"Cardiopulmonary testing is generally readily available, and it has great utility in


clinical practice for people with heart and lung disease," he said. "Your peak
fitness level is measured by oxygen uptake, and fitness is the most important
prognostic variable of any data we can get from an exercise tolerance test."

Although CPX has long been used to assess athletic performance and in
research, its burgeoning value in the clinical setting prompted the American
Heart Association to convene a group of experts to write its first comprehensive
cardiopulmonary exercise testing guide for heart specialists. The new statement,
published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, is a
supplement to the association's existing guidelines for exercise testing.

"There has been limited or absent training of cardiovascular specialists on the


administration and interpretation of CPX, and a lack of understanding of its
value," Balady said. "However, modern CPX systems allow for simple and
complex analyses of these data that are easy to retrieve and store, which makes
CPX available for widespread use."

The statement covers the usefulness of CPX in cardiovascular disease, selecting


procedures, patient monitoring, device calibration, maintenance and quality
control.

"The purpose of the statement is to acquaint clinicians with what is going on with
exercise testing," said Martha Gulati, M.D., co-author of the study and assistant
professor of medicine and preventive medicine at Northwestern University's
Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. "It has really evolved, but if you ask
many physicians, all they know is that it diagnoses ischemia."

Cardiac exercise stress tests, typically done using a treadmill, require physicians
to estimate the patient's oxygen uptake, using regression-analysis formulas.
Even then, the best estimates can be inaccurate by about 10 percent or more,
particularly if handrail support is used.
