The Importance
of Helping
with Chores
It is important to learn from a young age to take care of yourself or help around the house.
To begin with, your parents must realize that you will move out of the house at some point
in your life. Be it for college or later in life to start a family of your own. In college especially,
if you have not had any experience with household tasks, you will find it exceptionally
difficult to adjust and take care of yourself. The act of sharing tasks at home also makes it
easier for you to share your space later in life – be it with a roommate or a partner.
Sharing responsibilities within the family also helps develop a sense of discipline. If you
understand at a young age, the importance of taking responsibility for tasks that have
been given to you, it can only be beneficial. Rather than shunning your duties, you will
learn to rework your days to ensure you can have fun and also complete the work you are
assigned.
You also understand the concept of being held accountable when you do not complete
your work. This will stem from a sense of understanding that you are a part of a larger
community which is the family. These habits will, in turn, be inculcated into your own fam-
ilies when you are older.
Ensure you are a part of the decision-making process while creating a chore chart. Your
chore can be something as small as putting away your own toys and tidying up your
room. It could also involve helping your parents set the table or clear it up after meal.

stories from history
Over the next thousand years, they spread over an area of half a million
square miles. Excavations prove that the level of urban planning and architec-
ture prevalent here was incomparable. The anchor for this civilization lay in
the beautiful twin cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.
The name Mohenjo-Daro means ‘Mound of the Dead’ in Sindhi. The city was built
around 2600 BC and abandoned around 1700 BC. Evidence suggests that the
city was highly prone to floods.
6
These cities were made of bricks – either baked mud or wood bricks. The
baked bricks were a superior version of the sun-dried bricks used in other
civilizations. They ensured the durability of the buildings.
Each house had a well from which it drew water. From a bathing room the
waste water was directed into covered drains along the main streets. Since all
the streets were well-drained, the city remained dry and clean. What an amaz-
ing and very modern method of sanitation and sewage.
7
Mohenjo-daro was primarily an agricultural city. It was situated below the
great mountain ranges, with rivers flowing abundantly through the land, de-
positing rich fertile soil. Agriculture was a very important occupation for the
people of Mohenjo-daro.
Houses were well protected from noise, odour and thieves. Each house opened
out onto inner courtyards and smaller lanes, so it was safe. Although some
houses were larger than the others, the city seemed to promote an equal so-
ciety, for all houses had the same kind of access to water and drainage.
The city had an impressive defense structure in place as well. Though it lacked
outer walls, there were defensive towers in the West and South. Since other
Indus cities had stronger defense systems in place, it is speculated that per-
haps Mohenjo-daro was only an administrative center.

Shankar Abaji
Bhise
Shankar Abaji Bhise was an Indian inventor, innovator and scientist who was entirely
self-trained. He spent his childhood reading the Scientific American Magazines which were
his introduction to the field of mechanical engineering. His big break came in the late 1890s
when he won a trip to London.
It was during the early 1900s he produced his most innovative inventions – varying from
kitchen gadgets to an automatically flushing toilet. He did so with the backing of Dadabhai
Naoroji; who also had a long commercial career in England. Bhise’s most significant creation
involved the printing press.
He created a prototype for the ‘Bhisotype’ – which would have had changed the printing
industry. He was never able to bring together funds to market the Bhisotype. Despite falling
into obscurity, he must be remembered for his innovative spirit, all while also supporting
the freedom struggle in India.

leave. We got a start when we opened the front door to find a cold and
shivering piglet sitting on our doorstep! We could see the school bus
