1.1 Introduction

Ph
19
The ESM is an energy storage unit composed of lithium-ion batteries. It features better charge

/20
and discharge performance, longer service life, and less self-discharge loss than ordinary

4
batteries.

5:2
/09

7:5
The ESM consists of electrochemical cells, an energy storage management unit (ESMU),
16

power and signal terminals, and mechanical parts. It can be used as an independent 48 V unit,
90
supports the mix use of old and new batteries as well as lithium and lead-acid batteries, and
01
:54

can collaborate with third-party power systems.

Features
en
en

uy

 Parallel connection for power expansion: The maximum power (P) of N ESMs
Ng
y

connected in parallel can reach 15 kW. For details, see 2.1 Parallel Connection.
gu

 Application in class B environments with direct ventilation: The ESM can be used in
do
_N

indoor environments where the ambient temperature and humidity are not controlled or
am

outdoor environments (with simple shielding measures) where the humidity can reach
33

Gi

100%.
89

 Supporting third-party power systems: The ESM implements lithium battery

on

self-management so that it can be used with third-party power systems.

06

oT

 Hybrid use: The ESM can be connected in parallel with lead-acid batteries.
Ph

 Maintenance-free: The maintenance-free feature in the use of the ESM reduces the costs
of battery O&M and the frequency of site visits.
 Long service life: The ESM life is two or three times the life of common lead-acid
19

:24

batteries. The battery state of health (SOH) and state of charge (SOC) can be monitored
:55

online in real time. These features improve the reliability of site power backup.

Functions

nM

Ta
hi
 Status monitoring: Monitors the electrochemical cell voltage, current, and temperature as

nT
ye
well as the ESM voltage.

ye
gu
 Alarm management: Generates alarms when overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent,

gu
overtemperature, or undertemperature occurs.

_N

cN
 Exception protection: Protects against overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, short

33

do
circuits, overtemperature, undertemperature, electrochemical cell faults, and hardware
faults.

iam
89
 Information reporting: Provides a northbound CAN/RS485 port through which alarms

06

gG
and status data are reported.

on
 Parallel connection: Multiple ESMs can be connected in parallel. CAN communication

oT
supports parallel connection of up to 32 ESMs, and RS485 communication supports

Ph
parallel connection of up to 16 ESMs.

19
 Balance: Supports real-time electrochemical cell balancing.
 E-label: Identifies the ESM using an electronic label.

/20

4
 Antitheft: Provides the mechanical and software-based antitheft function when being

5:2
/09
used with specified Huawei power systems.

7:5
 Forcible disconnection: Users can disconnect the external power supply to the PWR port
16

90
and hold down the MANUAL ON/OFF button for 5s to power off the ESM forcibly.
01
:54

 Maintenance mode: used for ESM replacement. Users can hold down the MANUAL
7/2

ON/OFF button for 15s to enter the maintenance mode so that the ESM can be replaced
15

0/0

safely and reliably.

_N
 Class B environment (uncontrolled environment): refer to indoor environments where

the ambient temperature and humidity are not controlled or outdoor environments (with

simple shielding measures) where the humidity can reach 100%.

iam

 Class C environment (harsh environment): refer to outdoor land environments (with
simple shielding measures) near seas or pollution sources. If a site is near a sea, it is

06

gG
0.5–3.7 km away from the sea. If a site is near a pollution source, it is at most 3.7 km

away from salt lakes, 3 km away from heavy pollution sources such as smelteries, coal

chemical, rubber, and galvanization industries, or 1 km away from light pollution sources

such as packing houses, tanneries, and boiler rooms.

2.5 Storage with Low SOC (≤ 5%)

The ESM has ESMU static power consumption and self-discharge loss after power-off. In
actual application scenarios, avoid storing an ESM with low SOC (≤ 5%). If unavoidable,

limit the storage duration to 30 days at 25°C or 15 days at 45°C. Promptly recharge the ESM

after the storage. Otherwise, the ESM may be damaged due to overdischarge, which requires
replacing the ESM.
Ph

The following situations may cause storage of ESMs in discharge state:

6.1 Safety Precautions

Ph
19
 Avoid skin contact with electrolyte overflow. Before installing or maintaining batteries,

/20
wear goggles, rubber gloves, and protective clothing.

4
 Keep the ESM loop disconnected during installation and maintenance.

5:2
/09
 Secure ESM cables to the torque specified in the ESM documentation. Loose

7:5
16

connections will result in excessive voltage drops or cause ESMs to burn out when the
90
current increases.
01
:54

 Protect your skin and eyes from ESM electrolyte leakage. If your body comes in contact
7/2

with electrolyte leakage, wash with clean water immediately and visit a doctor if the
15

0/0

situation is serious.
h_

,2

 Avoid ingestion of ESM components.

ky
an

 Protect the ESMs from mechanical vibration, collision, punctures, and strong impact.
da

Otherwise, the ESM may catch fire.

Th

am

 Do not throw ESMs in fire because this may cause the ESMs to ignite.
inh

iT

 Do not immerse ESMs in water or expose them to rain.

Th

 There is a risk of explosion if an ESM is replaced with an incorrect model.

M

en

 Short circuits inside an ESM or on the ESM loop must be prevented to avoid fire and
en

uy

personal injury.
Ng
y

 An ESM communication failure alarm caused by reasons such as loose communications

gu

cable connection should be handled within 72 hours (default value, configurable in the
do
_N

range of 8 to 720 hours). Otherwise, the ESM will be internally locked, which may affect
am

the ESM power backup.

33

Gi

If the ESM is severely misused, for example, being burned or thunderstruck, the ESM may be
