ODS – the
force behind
our services
It’s 8am on a Monday morning; the
city centre is getting busier by the
minute with people going to work
and visitors arriving. The streets
appear clean of debris, the bins are
clear too. Crews from Oxford Direct
Services (ODS) have been out and
about setting the scene since 5am.

ODS is similar to a social enterprise and is wholly

owned by the City Council. It’s aiming to return
millions of pounds to the Council through savings and returns
generated from commercial services. This money is used for
core Council services, to offset cuts in Government grants and
to create jobs.

It’s not just about street cleaning though. You’ll find ODS
staff in our parks too, making them a pleasant experience by
maintaining the trees, grass and plants. ODS manages the City
Council’s car parks (including the park and rides), carries out If you see work that needs to be done, for example, if

quietly serving the city, say ‘hello’ – they’ll appreciate it.

Have you visited the Covered Market recently?

E arlier this year a new fishmonger, microbrewery and sports
store opened in the city centre market, joining the existing
diverse range of independent small businesses.

The Grade II-listed market, which is managed by Oxford City

Council, has been operating continuously since the late 18th century.

It now features more than 50 traders selling food, gifts, shoes,

fashion, flowers and jewellery. And its long-term future is
currently being secured thanks to £3.1 million of investment from
Oxford City Council, including £1.8 million to refurbish the roof.

O xford will be illuminated with thoughts of ‘Discovery’ from

Friday 15th to Sunday 17th November. The theme for the
city’s 2019 Christmas Light Festival looks at the world with the
eyes of a pioneer as cultural organisations, community groups,
schools, artists and performers fill the streets with art installations,
exhibitions, performances and family activities for everyone.

A rolling programme kicks off on Friday as the lantern parade

weaves around the city with lamps made by Oxford school
children and community groups with resident artists. Outdoor
activities will be taking place throughout the city with hubs at
Broad Street, Gloucester Green and Bonn Square.

The festival features

S chools are using our parks and green spaces for forest school
sessions. They aim to build confidence and knowledge of
the environment for four to six year olds. The children explore
different environments, play, build fires (under supervision) and

These sessions are open only to school groups, but there is also

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil: from Sicily to Oxford

Hello Oxford!
I am writing to let you know that again this year we’ll run a campaign on Kickstarter to help us bring to
Oxford our organic extra virgin olive oil, produced in Sicily from a grove planted more than a century ago
by my great-grand-father. The trees are still tended organically today without the use of any pesticides or
artificial irrigation systems. Every year, the olives are harvested entirely by hand and collected in October,
early in the picking season when they are greener and not fully ripe, thus yielding a smaller quantity of oil,
which as a result is more intense in flavour. If you like the sound of it and wish to contribute, I promise to
personally deliver your bottle(s) to your door before Christmas.
I won’t have to go far, as I live in Oxford myself after all!
Many thanks in advance, Giuseppe
