April 30, 2020

Open book and notes (Exam duration: 2 hours)

1. (20 points) The angular velocity of link (2) is 1.0 rad/sec CW. For link lengths, take direct
measurements from the figure in centimeters.

(a) Determine all the instant centers. (8 points)

(b) Determine the angular velocity of link 3 and link 4 (magnitude and direction). (6 points)
(c) Determine the velocity of point B on link 3 (magnitude and direction). (6 points)

2. (20 points) For this mechanism the constant link lengths are O2 B = 1.0, O2O4 = 2.23, BC = 3.0
cm, and O4 B = 1.55 cm in the configuration shown. The velocity polygon is provided and the
following angular velocities are determined: ω 2 = 1.0 rad/s CCW, ω 3 = 0.33 rad/s CW. The angular
acceleration of link (2) is 0.5 rad/sec2 CW.

(a) Construct the acceleration polygon. All vectors must be labeled clearly (10 points).
(b) Determine the angular acceleration of link BC (4 points).
(c) Determine the acceleration of point C (magnitude and show direction clearly) (6 points).

3. (30 points) For this four-bar mechanism, the link lengths are: O2 A = 0.40 m, AB = 0.55 m, and
O4 B = 0.20 m. A force of 20 N acts on point A to the left, and a force of 15 N acts at the center of
link (3), point C, perpendicular to the link in the direction shown.

Apply the power formula to determine the torque (magnitude and direction) that should be
applied on link (4) in order to keep the four-bar in static equilibrium. For your convenience a
velocity polygon for the mechanism in this configuration is provided.

Please perform and show your calculation for each term of the formula separately before adding
them up.

4. (30 points) A clamping mechanism is shown. Determine the clamping force R when the
mechanism is subjected to the applied force F = 100N in the shown direction. Take measurements
directly from the figure.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to take advantage of the two-force member and three-
force member concept. Since that concept can be applied graphically, you hardly need to write
down any equations. For your convenience, the links of this system are shown individually on the
next page.
