Have you been using emoticons such as smileys and hearts in

almost every text message lately? Nowadays, people can't seem to
§**¡-cil i*":*ji**rii*
manage without them, leading educators to complain that we're
forgetting how to use words properly. Instead of thinking about what we want to say, we just
s use pictures instead. So where did the craze of communicating with pictures
come from?
Actually, pictures were the flrst form of writing. Paintings on cave walls described hunting
35,000 years ago. Much later, pictograms - pictures of actual objects, like a drawing
of the
sun -
were used in ancient Egypt, where üey eventually developed into the complex picture-
writing language of hieroglyphics. In modem times, pictograms are still used to convey ideas,

-) for tears of happiness. Years later, in 1 998, a Jrapanese telecom engineer named
Shigetaka Kurita created emoji AS a way to attract teenagers to his companY's flewvear' J
mobile pho ne network. Soon, every J apanese teen was using these cute graphic synbols,
which
included everyday obj eCtS AS well AS emoticons.
Since üe 2000s, the popularity of emoji has spread outside Japan, and now billions
ofpeople
use üem worldwide. Their popularity has grown among adults as well
as teens. People even use
zo them as a kind of code, as in: It's ." !Let,s ry- and ..: As universal as emoji are, however,
you might notice that some synbols show tleir Japanese origins. For example, have you
ever
wondered what the symbols "$§ and " mean? The fint is a monster from Japanese mythology,
and the second is a popular Japanese dessert!
Why are we mad about emoticons? Actually, they fill an important
zs need. when we talk face to face, we use a lot more than words to get
our message across. Our tone ofvoice, the expression on our face and
our body language all help us to express what we mean. When we
communicate by messaging, all of üese clues are missing. The result is
that people can easily misunderstand us, often thinking we are more
30 serious than we mean to be.
A smiley or a winl< can do a lot to lighten things up. An emoticon can let the oüerperson
know
we are just joking, make our criticism sound a bit softer or express an emotion quickly
and
easily. The message I won't be able to meet you today may sound like you
don't care, but
a : : shows your disappointment, and a ¿: shows you're really upset. Does all this mean"áamgwe,re
35 going backwards, using pictures instead of written
language like the cavemen? In a way. But
in this day and age, when we communicate by messaging more than face to face, a picture
really is worth a thousand words.
