Technology. Using technology co-developed by Panavision
and Omega Optical, a comb-filter in the projector slices the
visible spectrum into ten bands – five for the left eye and five
for the right eye – without favoring any particular combination
of primary colors. In so doing, the Panavision 3D System
functions equally well with film and digital projection systems.
Audiences wear passive glasses with thin-film comb-filters built
into the lenses; each eye sees only those wavelengths sent to it,
but each eye receives the same amount of total white light
energy, so the images appear approximately equal in bright-
ness and color; the brain combines them to create 3D.

Film Systems. Film projectors require the 2D film lens to be

replaced with the 3D lens – and the light output to be
increased. The film lens for the Panavision 3D system is
available in three different focal lengths; each has two spectral
comb filters mounted in the back of the lens to split the light. In
the lens, the glass elements themselves are also
split; one part of those elements delivers the
left-eye image, one part delivers the right. The
system supports focal lengths from 31 mm to 77
mm and the correct lens, with adapters, if
necessary, will be included.

Digital Systems. In digital projectors using DLP technology,

the Panavision 3D System inserts a filter wheel between the
lamphouse and the integrator bar. The split filter rotates at high
speeds, with one-half transmitting to the left eye and one-half
transmitting to the right eye. The wheel can be
actuated by macro commands at the operator
panel or from within the digital content playlist.
In a digital projector, the same lens is used for 2D
and 3D projection, but light output also must be
increased when showing a 3D movie vs. a 2D one.
3D Glasses. Using thin-film filter technology co-developed by
Panavision and Omega Optical, the re-usable passive glasses
offer reliable and consistent performance. The lenses are real
tempered glass with precision coatings that resist scratching
and cracking. Frames are high-quality nylon with
re-usable adapters available. And because
glasses are re-used, rather than disposed of, they
enable exhibitors to be more environmentally-
sensitive. The same glasses are used with film
and digital systems.
Washing / Sanitizing System. The compact commercial-grade
washer provides consistent heating and quiet operation in a
process where glasses are exposed to 180°F heat for a minimum
of 30 seconds, which meets requirements for sanitization.
Washing and sanitizing takes less than three minutes and the
system uses less than one gallon of water per
cycle. Glasses emerge dry and spot-free. Custom

Compatibility. The system is compatible with all cinema
screens, white or silver, all film projectors and all digital
cinema grade projectors using DLP technology. The Panavision
3D System is also compatible with all 3D film prints in the
over-under format – and with all digital cinema
packages (DCPs).
Installation, Training and Support. System packages include
lens and adapters, or filter wheel and mounting hardware, as
required. Most packages can be tailored to include a supply of
glasses, as well as washing system with custom racks. Installa-
tion and training can be provided by the supplier chosen by the
customer and are not included in the price.
