Engineering Case Study

Satellite and Aerial Installation

Stuart Wedge

Stuart left the Army as a Corporal having served over 8 years in the AGC
as a Military Clerk. After completing the Satellite and Aerial Installation
course and gaining 98% and Distinction his name was included in the
Confederation of Aerial Industries quarterly magazine. Stuart left his
contact details in the magazine saying that he was looking for
employment in the Fife Area and was offered 5 jobs before resettlement
was over!

He took up employment with a local Custom Installation company

installing Satellite and Aerial systems and taking part in Home Automation
Installs. After a short period of time Stuart was head hunted by a major
manufacturer and offered a job as Trade Support Executive for the
Scotland region giving technical advice and demonstrating new products.
However he decided that there is more money as an Installer running his
own company, so in September 2007 began trading and never looked
back.

CTP asked Stuart a number of questions about his course at the RTC:

Do you have any general comments about the course?

„I felt the course was very in depth, it has provided me with an excellent knowledge about the technical side of the
industry. It starts with the very basic theory and then progresses on to more in depth analysis, a reasonable grasp
of basic mathematics will help anyone attending this course.‟

Which areas of the course have aided in your employment?

„I felt that the theory and design of Integrated Reception Systems was very helpful. Since leaving the Army I have
designed and installed several IRS Systems and performed maintenance on many more. I enjoy the problem solving
aspect of detailed system installation, with domestic installations there is not a great deal of things that can go
wrong, with systems there is more possible factors to be taken into account.‟

Would you recommend this course to others? And is there a specific group who would find this course
useful?
„I would recommend this course to anyone who likes to work outside, has a head for heights and likes problem
solving. You also need to be physically fit as there is a great deal of manual lifting involved, a good sense of balance
is also a necessity.‟
