FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
Manufacturer’s warranty and general terms of service apply to all devices mentioned in this
manual. Guarantee and warranty information can be received from SyxthSense upon request
Building a burglar alarm system requires the FDX-Spider-40S version of the control unit, that is
backed up eith a battery and equipped with tamper switches. When expanding an existing system
the FDX-Spider-40 can and must be upgraded to FDX-Spider-40S.
If the alarm system is installed or programmed disregarding the instructions presented in this manual
the result might not fulfill the requirements of EN50131-1 and/or EN50131-3 security class 2. All
functionalities or connections not related to the alarm system must not affect the proper functioning
of the alarm system. All detectors must also be EN50131-1 security class 2 approved.
Note! Only authorized personnel can perform wiring to 230VAC electric networks. Disconnect
electricity during installation and maintenance procedures.
2.1 MOUNTING
The connection unit is mounted to a wall with four screws through the mounting brackets outside the
enclosure. The mounting points must be able to withstand the weight of the connector unit (7,3kg).
FDX-Spider connection unit is equipped with a fixed power cord. The power cord acts simultaneously
as an isolator. The power cord can only be connected to an earthed power outlet. The power outlet
must be situated near the connector unit and be easily accessible.
66

2.3 CONNECTORS
The connectors are marked with a combination of a letter and a number. Each connector has its own
letter code and the connector points are coded with numbers. The connectors are of springback type.
The two connector points on top of each other are connected so that two wires can be connected -
one to each connector. Wires can be released from the connectors by pressing the gap between the
connector points witha screwdriver. The connectors are delivered separately so that wires can be
connected to the connectors before attaching them to the connector unit.
Inside the enlosure there are T-shaped fastening points to which cables can be anchored with cable
ties. There is a marking next to the inlets for appropriate cable diameters. On connectors A1 to B8
(relay output connectors) cables with a diameter of 0.2mm² - 2.5 mm² can be used. With other
connectors cables with a diameter of 0.2mm² - 1.5 mm² can be used.
2.3.1 CONNECTORS A1 - B8
Connectors A1-B8 are relay outputs i.e. ”control points”. The relay type is N.O. and the outputs are
not connected to each other. In the FDX-SPIDER system these relay outputs are shown as a DO-
module in address 2 and labeled as control points.
The maximum load for the relays is either 6A/230VAC or 5A/30VDC. If 230VAC and low voltage
connections are made simultaneously, the different voltages must be separated by leaving at least
one empty connector point between them to ensure sufficient insulation.
A1, A2 DO 1 relay 1
A3, A4 DO 2 relay 2
A5, A6 DO 3 relay 3
A7, A8 DO 4 relay 4
B1, B2 DO 5 relay 5
B3, B4 DO 6 relay 6
B5, B6 DO 7 relay 7
B7, B8 DO 8 relay 8
2.3.2 CONNECTORS C1 - D8
Connectors C1-D8 are analog measurement inputs. In the FDX-Spider system these inputs are
shown as two AI-modules in addresses 3 and 4. The analog inputs can be programmed as
voltage measurement inputs (0-10V), resistive measurement inputs, indication inputs or alarm inputs.
Input type is specified in connection with the conversion table. Indication and alarm inputs are always
specified as resistive measurement inputs. Each input is measured approximately 3 second intervals
77
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
when all inputs are in use. Therefore it is to be taken into consideration that these inputs are not
suitable for fast signal measurement.
2.3.3 CONNECTORS E1 - E8
Connectors E1-E8 are security inputs that can also be used as indication inputs. In the FX- Spider
system these inputs are shown as a SI-module in address 5. Security inputs can be programmed to
act either as security alarm inputs (with or without line terminating resistor), indication inputs or
pulse counter inputs.
The security inputs are capable of fast signal measurement and thus are suitable also for pulse
measurement. When using inputs as pulse counters the points are defined in SPIDER-modules
(address 1) points 31-38, while point 31 corresponds to connector E1, point 32 to connector E2 and
so on.
88

2.3.4 CONNECTORS F1 - F8
Connectors F1-F8 are analog outputs. In the FDX-Spider system these inputs are shown as an AO-
module in address 6. The analog outputs are configured as AO-points in the system. The
analog outputs are voltage message outputs (0-10V). The output impedance for the analog outputs is
1000Ω and the maximum load 10mA.
2.3.5 CONNECTORS G1 - G8
Connectors G1 and G2 are meant for connecting an extrenal battery to the system. The connector is
protected by a fuse (F1). The positive terminal of the battery is connected to G1 and negative to G2.
For more information see 3.6 Backup battery.
Connectors G3 - G6 are voltage outputs (12V nominal) for field devices, such as movement
detectors. Note that the output voltage can vary between 10,7 and 14,5 volts. The outputs are also
backed up in systems where the backup battery is used.
99
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
The output is protected by a fuse (F2). The maximum load for the outputs is 2A each and the total
power consumption must not exceed 50W. For more information see 3.5 Power supply.
Connectors G7 and G8 are the power output for the display unit. When the power supply is
connected the voltage is +24VDC and during battery operation 10,7–14,5 volts. G7 is connected to
the ”+” and G8 ”-” connector on the display unit. The output is protected by a fuse (F3).
Note! Do not connect any other devices than the FDX-Spider display unit to this
output.
2.3.6 CONNECTORS H1 - H8
Connectors H1 and H2 are for RS485 field bus. H1 is the A-signal (”-”), H2 is the B-signal (”+”). H1 is
connected to the display unit’s connector ”A” and H2 to ”B” liittimeen. A 120Ω line terminating resistor
is pre-installed between H1 and H2. Do not remove the resistor.
Connectors H3-H8 are voltage outputs (+24VDC) for field devicess. The output is protected by
a fuse (F4). Maximum load for each output is 1,50A and the total power consumption must not
exceed 50W. For more information see 3.5 Power supply. The 24 volt outputs are not powered
during battery operation.

2.4 FUSES
Fuses can be replaced by original corresponding IEC 60127-2 approved fuses. Use fast type
5x20mm glass pipe fuses.
FDX-Spider unit has an internal power supply that is used for both – powering the device
and powering field devices.
Under no circumstrances must the load of the power outputs (both 12 and 24 volts)
exceed 50 watts.
FDX-SPIDER-40S includes battery backup. When mains power is unavailable the system
automatically starts battery operation. During battery operation the following measures are taken:
11
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
When the battery voltage drops to 10,8 volts the system shuts itself down.
Internal battery type Valve regulated lead-acid battery, Leader CT10-12. Internal
battery capacity 12V, 10Ah.
Internal battery size: 151mm x 65mm x 117mm (length x width x height) Internal
batteyr connectors flat cable connector 4,8mm.
12
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
The condition of the battery can be viewed from ”Asetukset-Spider asetukset”. The internal battery is
calculated to keep the system active for 12 hours, including 100mA field devices’ consumption. If the
field devices require more power or if the 12 hours is considered too short then an external battery
must be connected to the system (see 2.3.5 – Connectors G1-G8 for more information).
The external battery must have a 5A fuse of its own that is situated in the vicinity of the battery.
To ensure sufficient operation time during battery operation the internal battery must be replaced at
least every five years. Before opening the cover and changing the battery the system must be shut
down and power disconnected.
Be aware of possible other connected voltages from for example relay connections.
The lid is with eight screws, two on each side. Remove the screws and open the cover carefully
(mind the tamper switch). Disconnect the battery connector. Remove the collar holding the battery
and change the battery. Make sure none of the low voltage cables touch the power supply.
FDX-Spider can be equipped with a MC35iT GSM-modem for alarm transfer and SMS- control
applications. The modem is connected to the modem connector on the connector unit (marked with
”MC35iT”) using a special cable (FDX_SP_MC35_CABLE). For more information contact your
distributor.
The system can be expanded with external I/O-modules and by acquiring a license. After the
installation of the license the FDX-Spider can communicate with all SyxthSense I/O-modules.
Expansion modules are connected to the connectors H1 and H2. When connecting, the
13
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
Expansion modules can also be powered using connectors H3-H8 and I1-J8. In this case it is very
important not to exceed the maximum load of the power supply and battery capacity is
carefully considered.
3.1 CONNECTORS
The display unit is powered by the central unit (9-36VDC, connectors G7 and G8). For more
information see 2.3.5 Connectors G1-G8.
The extension bus (RS485) is connected to the central unit’s connectors H1 and H2. For more
information see 2.3.6 Connectors H1-H8.
The display unit can be installed on top of the main unit by attaching a mounting plate on top of the
main unit. The mounting plate is fixed using the same screws as for the cover. The display unit is
hung from its upper edge to the mounting plate and fixed with screws from the bottom edge.
14
FDX Spider Alarm System

4. LOOP CONNECTIONS
In burglar alarm applications it is typical to use loops terminated with a LTR (line
terminating resistor). Using a LTR help to distinguish errors from actual alarms.
Alarm loops can be connected to FDX-Spider main unit, SI-8 security module and DU-10 door
unit.
Loop connection with 3 resistors used if the tamper switch on a detector is used in the same
connector than the alarm indication. Using three resistors the following states can be distinguished:
Note! The tamper switch resistor value must be 1,8 kΩ and the rest 3,3 kΩ, tolerance 1%.
16
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
20
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
Loop connection with 2 resistors is used when a detector doesn’t have a tamper switch of its own, if
a tamper switch is connected as a separate loop or there’s no need to distinguish tamper
switch from cable fault alarm.
21

Detectors are connected as ON/OFF type if a resistor connection is not possible. An example of a
typical ON/OFF detector is a door contact sensor. In this case a tamper switch cannot be
connected in the same loop. When connected this way only two states can be distinguished: alarm
and normal state. Cable fault information cannot be obtained.
24
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
It is possible to acquire a license for expanding the FDX-Spider system. The license enables external
modules to be freely added to the system. The license is hardware bound based on the unique
product code. The product code can be viewed from ”Settings--> Spider settings”. Without the
license the system can handle one DU-10 door unit (in address 7), any additional modules appear in
a communication error state.
Loop inputs can be expanded with DU-10 and SI-8 modules. Detailed description of these units can
be found later in this manual.
Expansion modules are connected to FDX-Spider with RS-485 bus (connectors H1 and H2). When
multiple modules are connected simultaneously the modules must form a uniform bus. Connecting
the modules in a star topology can result in communication errors. A
120Ω line terminating resistor must be used when connecting the last module to the bus.
Expansion modules can be powered from the main unit. In this case one must ensure sufficient
battery capacity and consider possible voltage drops due to cabling.
The DU-10 module can handle 2 card readers, 2 door controls and 8 alarm loops. The DU-
The DU-10 fits well to a decentralized installation environment. The typical installation location is
near a door so that cabling can be kept minimal.
The DU-10 module must always be installed inside a supervised zone to prevent it to be tampered.
The DU-10 module is mounted with two screws through the bottom of the enclosure. During
installation the tamper switch must be adjusted to detect an alarm before the cover is lifted more than
1mm apart from the enclosure.

6. PROGRAMMING
The programming instructions are based on subsystem software 9.96. It is recommended to follow
the programming instructions in the same order they are presented in this manual for logical
approach.
6.1.1 GENERAL
To fulfill the requirements for EN50131-1 and/or EN50131-3 security class 2 some of the functions of
the systtem must be limited according to user level. The following describes the required system
settings.
6.1.2 SETTINGS
From "Settings -> System setup" menu all menu operations are set as forbidden for user levels 1
and 2 according to the settings in the picture. The most relevant selections are: "Show picture list
locally"
30
FDX Spider Alarm System

6.2.1 GENERAL
Desrciptive texts are used to describe the numerical values of I/O points as clear text. The descripive
texts should be defined before the actual programming to be able to set them as the programming
progresses. Texts can be afterwards edited. Descriptive texts are give through "Ohjelmointi-
>Tilatekstit".
A burglar alarm system has several sifferent state indications that can be described in clear
text. Here is an example of a typical configuration:

6.3.1 GENERAL
Before defining security group a number of points related to system operation are created. This is
described in “linking points to a security group”.
If a system contains multiple security groups (separately controllable areas) one must take into
consideration that the same point cannot be used in output/control type points (“number of
failed login attempts”, “group state DI”, “Siren output”), but that each group must have its own points.
34
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
The “number of failed login attempts” point defines how many times an access control device (e.g.
proximity reader, keypad etc.) tolerates a consecutive failed authorization. Security points are
created from "Security->Alarms" menu.
35
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
The point can be set up as shown in the picture below. An alarm group must be created it can be
linked to this. Creating the alarm point is described in ”alarm devices and alarm groups”. The alarm
group can be linked to the point later.
The exit delay point is defined as an analog input from the "Programming --> Measurement"
menu.. The function defines the exit delay in seconds when the alarm system is activated. Below is a
picture of an example set-up.
36
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
The system activation through scheduling is used to control the state of a security group based on for
example daily times. The schedule can be created from "Programming --> Schedule" menu.
The scheduling reacts only to state changes. If the schedule is meant to change the system
state to armed, the schedule must change the state first to "0-No effect". If the schedule is meant to
set the system state to armed / disarmed the corresponding states can be used.
Schedule
37
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
The group state point can be used to present the current state of a certain group as a point (digital
input). This way it can be linked to graphics. The group state point is set up from "Programming -->
Indications" menu.
40
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
Siren control point is a DO-point (digital output) to which a siren is connected. The control point can
be created from "Turvatoiminnot->Ohjaukset" menu.
The user group authorization schedule defines the identification method for changing system
state according to schedules. For example members of a group can be required to identify
themselves with a RFID-tag in the morning and a RFID-tag + PIN-code in the evening. The schedule
is created by selecting "Ohjelmointi->Aikaohjelmat".

6.10 GRAPHICS
6.10.1 GENERAL
Graphics are not a necessity for the functioning of the alarm system but they help to ease the use
from the users’ point of view. The graphics are html-pages created with FdxHtmlEdit graphics editor.
FdxHtmlEdit and its manual can be downloaded from www.syxthsense.com (requires an account).
The instructions here describe the most essential functions related to an alarm system. For more
thorough programming information please refer to the FdxHtmlEdit’s manual.
All menus should be limited to be viewable only to users at level 3. This means that all functions
accessible to users at level 2 have to be presented through graphics.
Symbols can be set with individual user level accessibility and viewability. On the ”User level” field set
the lowest level able to view and the lowest level able to use symbol separated by a comma. If the
symbol is used on a lower level than defined the system prompts for a PIN-code of a user that has
sufficient rights.
62
FDX Spider Alarm System
Installation & Configuration manual v 3.1
Graphics can have an automatic timeout. In the event of a timeout the system moves to a defined
page. Timeout is enabled by defining a new text object and linking it with an appropriate page
followed by a delay in seconds (e.g.
30 seconds. The delay can also be set as a point in the alarm point database. The point label is
given to the point ID field (e.g. ”TIMEOUT_M”)
Instead of moving to a page the system can also automatically logout the user after a predefinde
period of time. To do this, write ”logout” in the link field followed by the lowest user level and
delay. For example logout 1::45 logs the user out automatically after 45 seconds, if the user
logged in is at level 1 or higher.
