2V M rewdrivers, Philips and slotted
2V îire pliers
2V Mafety glasses

1.V 1

Put on safety glasses. Any time you are repairing an ele tri al devi e, safety glasses
should be your No. 1 tool. Mhut off all ele tri power to the motor, whether by turning off
a ir uit breaker or removing fuses from the dis onne t swit h.

2.V 2

Remove the wiring over on the motor and set aside the s rews. Read the motor's
nameplate data to onfirm whether it's a low-voltage 115-volt motor, a 230-volt motor or
a three-phase 230-volt or high-voltage 480-volt motor. This will determine the number of
power leads the motor has. All single-phase 115-volt and 230-volt motors have two wire
leads that onne t to the power supply. All three-phase 230-volt and 480-volt motors
have three wire leads that onne t to the three-phase power supply.

3.V 3

Remove the plasti wire onne tors that onne t to the power supply. You may have to
identify the power leads to the wires on the motor if it is a three-phase motor. This will
ensure the rotation will be orre t when you re-terminate the motor. Turn your volt ohm
meter to the ohm setting. The meter should read OL (open lead) or zero ohms.

4.V 4

Tou h one lead to the ase of the motor, and test ea h motor lead. The ohm meter should
read OL, or zero ohms. If a reading of any ohms is observed, you may have a dire t short
in the motor windings; the motor may be bad. Mome motors, espe ially the three-phase
type, may have a large resistan e reading--in the 20 megaohms range or larger. This may
be fine, or this may be a sign that the bearings are going bad, as the motor may have
deteriorating windings due to ex essive heat.

5.V 5

Remove the apa itor from its housing if you are testing a single-phase motor that has a
apa itor. Be areful not to tou h the exposed leads. The apa itor is like a battery and
stores a high-voltage harge. Turn your volt ohm meter to volts and arefully tou h to the
bare leads of the apa itor. If voltage is read, the apa itor still ontains a harge.
Holding the leads of the meter to the apa itor should show it dis harging. Continue until
zero voltage is observed on the meter. Most modern volt ohm meters have a apa itor-
testing swit h, making it easy to determine the status of the apa itor. In most ases, the
apa itor only needs to be repla ed on these types of single-phase motors.
