Context/ Rationale

Reading is essential for every learner to learn even in home, and in school.
Posters, magazines and, books consist of words, phrases, and sentences. These could
attract people’s attention and process the eagerness to read what it contains.

In the researcher’s station, Lugta Elementary School (LES) which is

located in one of the highland areas of Tanjay City, Lugta, Pal-ew, pupils love to read
books full of stories and even colorful posters. The researcher focuses on the Grade 1
class consisting of 8 boys and 14 girls, making a total of 22. It has been observed
within the researcher’s class that out of 22pupils, 54% can’t read orally.

In this study, the researcher notified several factors affecting the reading
skills of Grade 1 pupils enrolled in LES. These are as follows: poor reading
comprehension, lack of supplementary reading materials, poor study habits, and
irregular attendance of the pupils and parents’ undesirable approach in helping of
giving follow-ups to their children especially in monitoring the study habits.

These are the researcher’s reasons why there is a need to conduct the study
to help the learners develop reading comprehension skills using English as the
medium of instruction.
