“We can’t stop it”

– Settle MP
By Helen Tatchell

The message, “this is not a State Government

project”, is not what the crowd at Myrniong really
wanted to hear from their local member.
Micheala Settle (State member for Buninyong)
addressed the anti above ground high voltage
transmission line community members last Saturday, and tempers were hot.
“I am here today to offer you any support I can offer, and I can understand
how everyone feels – I come off a fourth-generation farm in Ararat,” she said.
Ms Settle also said there is an old adage amongst activists.
“Don’t get angry, get organised.
“We can all be angry, but you have to get your information together, your
arguments together, and put them in at the appropriate time,” she said.
“Basically Mondo, the Company, has won a tender through AEMO (Australian
Energy Market Operator)…..to understand this is NOT a Victorian government
project. AEMO is a nationwide body and controls the power networks of
Australia.” Ms Settle said the main thing the Victorian government would be
engaged in “would be finally signing off on the planning permits”.
“And you need to understand, planning is incredibly legal bound. Even if I READY TO GIVE AUSNET SOME CURRY - (L-R) Margaret, Stephen, Bernard and Andrew Curry will be

absolute requirement for community consultation”.

Protesters screen their cause

By Lachlan Ellis
(3rd Yr Deakin Uni)

With the COVID-19 pandemic in mind, the Bacchus Marsh

Community Coalition (BMCC) decided to hold an online
rally against toxic PFAS-contaminated soil last Thursday
night.
At 8pm, a peak of around 370 members joined the virtual
protest on the video conferencing program Zoom, with over
200 watching a simultaneous livestream of the rally on the
group’s Facebook page.
Kat Barlow, leader and spokesperson for the Coalition group,
led the rally, crossing to eight different speakers during the
90-minute event.
Guest speakers included state politicians Bev McArthur
(Liberal MLC for Western Victoria) and Sam Hibbins (Greens
MP for Prahran), concerned residents from across Victoria,
and members of other environmental groups concerned
by the proposed dumping of the Westgate Tunnel’s PFAS-
contaminated soil.
The BMCC reiterated its concerns that no formal decision
had yet been made by the State Government. They accused
local State MPs Steve McGhie (Melton) and Michaela
Settle (Buninyong) of keeping local residents in the dark
about Transurban and MBCs plans, and avoiding direct
consultation with the community. McGhie and Settle A screenshot of the BMCC rally held on Thursday the 18th of June.
