diligent manner and to follow the correct technical standards.

In addition it provides the frame work to undertake the work in a safer manner and with due care of
environmental matters

2.- SCOPE

This element of works involves the installation of concrete foundations for new structures over
M50. In particular, it deals with the central base of S01-N3.

The scope of work is to excavate to design levels, blind ground, install reinforcing steel, erect
shutters & pour concrete.

5.- PROCEDURE

5.1.- Description of the works

The sequence of the execution of the cap will be as follows:

 Area to be excavated will be marked out by M50 D&C engineers
 Health and Safety team to barrier area to be excavated.
 Health and Safety team to check all service drawings & scan area to be excavated.
 M50 D&C to have spotter in place at all times to control excavator & lorries. Spotter to
insure barriers are closed prior to going to breakfast, lunch & home.
 Earthworks subcontractor will complete A F3 daily for all excavating.
 Permit to dig shall be issued prior to excavation for foundation
 All excavations bellow 1.25 M will be battered back. The maximum depth of excavations
will be approximately 2 meters.
 A survey crew shall set out the area of the foundation. Level of sub-formation shall be
checked.
 Sub-formation shall be inspected for soft spots and any found will be removed. The
excavation shall be kept free from water in accordance with Cl602, slump hole shall be dug
and filled with stone and water pumped into the mainline drainage
 Access to openings will be by ladder. Ladder will be fixed / one side of opening ramped for
access if required.
 If surface for blinding is very irregular a layer of 6N will be placed and compacted to ensure
an even surface to place the blinding concrete.
 Excavation will then be blinded up to pre determined level to allow reinforcing cages to be
put in place. M50 D&C operatives will level blinding to pre determined levels given by M50
D&C engineers.
 Permit to pour shall be issued. Blinding shall be finished by tamping, a polythene blanket
will cover the concrete if necessary. Survey crew to check finished level A designated area
shall be appointed to wash out the concrete lorries.
 Depending on the size of the foundation, reinforcing cages will be pre fabricated in a
predetermined area by M50 D&C foreman & Safety on site. If the size of the excavation is
appropriate and the weight of the cage is two high, the cage will be fabricated in situ at the
final position. All rebar will be capped where appropriate.
 Area will be barriered off with relevant signage & fire extinguishers in place.
 If the cages have been fabricated outside the excavation, they will be transported to site and
lowered into place using 200 / 225 excavator.
 Shutters sections will be hand balled into excavation and assembled.
 All off cuts will be removed no waste to be left on site all involved to clean as they go.
 Set out and check dimensions before commencement of works. Steel to be fixed in
accordance with drawings and schedules. During the steel fixing process all ducts where
necessary shall be accommodated. All surfaces of the shutters shall be clean, free from
contaminants and coated with release agent to prior to erection. Concrete spacers to be used
to ensure minimum cover according to the drawings. Ensure adequate lifting plant is
available to lift the steel cages into place if it has been fabricated else where.
 Spotter will guide concrete lorries into place. Lorry driver will not move unless spotter
instructs him to.
 Slump test will be carried out for each load to ensure slump of concrete is within the
specified tolerances and cubes will be taken concrete in accordance within specifications for
testing. *
*-Full details described in -
“Structural Concrete” method Statement numbered 170.1
 Concrete will be poured from the shoots of concrete lorries in a controlled manner and not
poured from a height greater than 2metres.*
 Concrete to be sufficiently vibrated during placement. Surface level and finish to be
monitored. *
 All operatives will wear gloves and safety glasses during concrete pour. All spillages will be
cleaned from shutters
 Surfaces to be backfilled shall receive a waterproofing product as per drawings. A post
survey should e carried out to ensure compliance with the specified tolerances and that the
starter bars and kicker are correctly positioned, the foundation sizes shall be in accordance
with the specified design.
 Concrete will be finished to a pre determined level by M50 D&C engineers.
 All shutters once struck will be stacked neatly and moved on to the next pad to be poured.

5.2.- Materials, Plant and Equipment

 1 No Excavator 200 or 225

 2 No Tipper lorries
 1 No Banks man
 3 No Steel fixer
 4 No Carpenters
 2 No General operatives

6.-QUALITY AND ENVIORENMENT

Before the beginning of the executions of structure foundations all the MAR’s shall be
presented and approval.

Pouring the concrete

As describe in “Structural Concrete” method Statement numbered 170.1

Curing the concrete

The concrete shall be cured in different ways depending on the prevailing weather conditions. The
use of water, damp hessian, curing membrane, polythene or chemical curing compound shall be in
accordance with Cl. 1710/5 and Table 17/6 of the NRA SRW.

6.1- Witness and Hold Points

According to Schedule 10 Part 1 Clause 2 & 3:
“All quality and Environmental documentation shall indicate points where no further work or
activity shall proceed without the documented authorisation of the designated person identified in
the related work instruction, method statement, inspection and test plan, design review plan, design
verification plan, operation and maintenance manual or other control document (“Hold Points”)”
All Quality and Environmental documentation shall allow for the Authority’s Representative and/or
PPP Co’s Representative to be given the opportunity to indicate “Witness Points” which mean
points at which the Contractor shall give due notice to the Authority’s Representative and/or PPP
Co’s Representative and allow time and provide facilities for the Authority’s Representative and/or
PPP Co’s Representative to witness the process at that point.”

The following table indicates the hold and witness points applicable to this Method Statement:

6.2- Concrete Washout areas

M50 forepersons will prevent the discharge of pollutants to storm water and soil from concrete
waste by conducting washout offsite, performing onsite washout in a designated area, and training
employee and subcontractors.

Adjacent to each concrete areas, according to European normative, temporary concrete washout
areas should be installed. These areas will be signalised to inform concrete equipment operators to
utilize the proper facilities.

Concrete washout areas are waterproof holes. These areas should be maintained to provide adequate
holding capacity with minimum freeboard of 4 in. The maintained should include removing and
disposing of hardened concrete and returning the facilities to functional condition.

The concrete removed of the Concrete washout areas will be treated like an inert waste.
