Description of Loss: The fire started in the ground floor due to an electrical short circuit which spread quickly to upper floors was
extinguished by the fire fighting personals.

Fire Fighting Operation & Challenges:

1. The guests in the upper floor were trapped and were
in panic situation.
2. Set back area around the building was not provided.

Probable Cause of Loss: Electrical short circuit

Preventive Measures suggested as per IS 13716:1993 Fire Safety in Hotels – Code of Practice
1. Wiring and installations should comply with NFPA 70.
2. A fire control room shall be established on ground floor near the main entrance IS 13716, 5.3
3. All employees should be trained to raise fire alarm use first aid fire fighting equipments in case of fire IS 13716, 5.4
4. Good housekeeping and elimination of hazardous situations should be monitored by management on day to day basis
regularly IS 13716, 5.8
5. Preventive inspection, testing and maintenance of all fire protection systems, all machineries which may cause fire should
be practiced IS 13716, 5.9
6. All false ceiling and floors should be on non combustible materials of class 1 flame spread rating IS 13716, 6.2.3
7. All shafts/ ducts for drainage pipes, plumbing, wiring and cabling should be effectively sealed to restrict fire/ smoke IS
13716, 6.3.2
8. Air conditioning system shall have arrangement for smoke/ fire venting and shall be linked with fire detection system to
automatically cut off the respective floor Air handling unit in case of a fire. IS 13716, 6.3.8
9. All employees should be familiar with evacuation plans and their individual roles in assisting guests to safety , to control
growth of fire and other actions that lead to life safety IS 13716, 5.6
10. Location of the room, escape routes to staircases and clear instructions what guests should do in an emergency should be
permanently posted in guest rooms IS 13716, 5.5
11. All hotel buildings irrespective of height shall have fire detection and fire suppression system as follows, IS 13716, 9.1:
i. Internal hydrant system/ hydrant and sprinkler IS 3844:1989
ii. Automatic fire detection cum alarming system IS 2189:1988
iii. Portable fire extinguishers IS 2190:1992
iv. Efficient public addressing system
v. In kitchen hoods and ducts automatic and manual fire protection of CO 2/ Dry powder extinguisher shall be used
12. Combustible materials should not be stored close to electrical panels and switch boxes.
13. Set back area should be provided in the building as per NBC 2016, Part 3, 8
