The Safety Actions during Emergencies in the Working Place

Introduction

After the emergency has occurred in the working place, the initial actions that are taken

by the people in the working area during the time of emergency are critical. Some of the relevant

and critical actions after the emergency, including but not limited to employees’ lockdown,

shelter, or evacuation (Klinoff, 2019). These are the initial actions and are very crucial in saving

the lives of the employees in the place. Additionally, the actions may involve calling at public

emergency services. This will provide accurate and full information helping the dispatcher

sending the equipment and responders. Such emergencies may include fire outbreak or

workplace violence. The main actions that are included in the emergency plan are evacuation,

sheltering, shelter-in-place, and lockdown. The emergency plan provides life safety-related

actions. Such actions are as discussed below.

Evacuation

During the establishment of an organization, there ought to be a well-structured alerting

system. This system will help in warning the employees in times of emergencies. It is through

the signals that the employees will escape the danger. The location and situation of the system

should be designed that once it rings, it is heard by all employees in their respective places.

When there is a fire outbreak, there ought to be a corresponding fire alarm (Klinoff, 2019). In

case there is no fire alarm, public address system can be espoused. Additionally, air horns,

among other means of sending signals, can be utilized to ensure that all employees have the

information that there is a fire outbreak or any other emergency. All these attempts are to ensure

that all employees evacuate and that there is nobody in the yard. Also, employees should be

familiar with different sounds and their meanings.

The various considerations are crucial, especially in managing emergency cases. The

main factor is to ensure that there are fire exits in all places. It is fundamental to ensure that there

are at least two fire exits on every floor in all buildings. Fire codes or structures call for more fire

exists in cases of building s that are large. The concerned team ought to walk in all floors to

ensure that the exits have exit signs (Klinoff, 2019). Additionally, on all floors, there ought to be

with adequate lighting to ensure that people can safely move to the exits. In case there are

missing safety measures, the management should be notified to have them implemented. After

this, the concerned team should ensure that they have walked through every stairwell. They

should walk down the stairwell opening, such exit door to the outside. Their movement should

be up to the place that is away from the building, and that is safe. They should, therefore,

consider the usage of such safe place as the first area where the evacuees assemble after

evacuation during the emergency.

The management should have a leader of the evacuation team. Employees should be

assigned to direct building evacuation. Alongside that, each floor must be assigned one person

who will be acting as a floor warden (Klinoff, 2019). It is this person who will be responsible for

directing employees towards the nearest fire exit during emergencies. There should also be a

backup to be acting especially when the floor warden is not available.
