Theme 1: Industry trends

This theme has been recurrent and there has been a pattern that has been established regarding
industry trends on adoption of CSR initiatives. An example is the increasing adoption of CSR by firms in
the aluminum manufacturing industry. Preliminary research on the subject shows that the cosmetics
industry has shown more investment in CSR in recent because other firms in the industry are doing so
and pressure is increasing from consumers (One Green Planet 2016). It should be noted that the themes
included in this section are founded on literature review and other information collected by the
researcher. Consequently, there might be new themes identified orb included in the study upon
conduction of the case study based on the data collected.

Theme 2: Cost-benefit analysis

Investment in CSR is an issue that raises concerns among shareholder as it is an expense that is not
directly linked with immediate benefits and shareholders’ primary interest is maximizing profit.
Consequently in adopting a CSR initiative, a firm needs to take into consideration the costs incurred
gauged against the potential benefits.

Theme 3: Progressive reclamation

Due to the damage that operations of a manufacturing or production firm have on their immediate
environment, it is essential to secure the environmental, social and economic welfare of societal
members by creating stringent reclamation program.

Theme 4: Environmental compliance

The element of environmental compliance introduces a particular issue – policy. While the company
may choose to initiate efforts to preserve the environment, there are policies that have been developed
by the national and local government and that the company can create to cover the issue of
environmental compliance.

Theme 5: Community commitment/ closure security

Closing an aluminum site may create challenges as is exhibited by the recent controversy regarding the
Panguna Mine. It is essential for a firm to put in place adequate measures to ensure that the site
continues to exercise reclamation and preserves the environment even after closure. The theme is
important as a challenge because a firm may find itself in a problem even after exercising their
responsibility to the society. Rio Tinto is an example of such a challenge as is shown based on the
Panguna Mine
