Catalog Description: This course is intended to provide the student with an understanding
of the various aspects of disease processes. Emphasis will be placed upon the etiology and
pathogenesis of a given disorder at the genetic, molecular, cellular and organ level.

Prerequisites: BID 250 and either BID 251 or CHE 112

Required Textbook: Pathology for the Health-Related Professions- (5th edit)

Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes

1. To introduce the general concepts of disease processes and provide a

background for understanding specific disease mechanisms.

2. Basic mechanisms that lead to alterations of structure and function will be

covered.

3. Examine various pathologic alterations of different organ systems. The

etiology, pathology and physiology of a given disorder relating to a particular
organ system will be discussed.

4. Introduce students to the clinical aspects of pathology including laboratory tests

used for the diagnosis of diseases. Studies performed on patient’s samples
(blood, tissue, body fluids) to assess the pathophysiological changes will be
introduced.

5. A focused illustrative program with photographs, drawings and charts

throughout the book and various websites will be utilized to clarify the more
difficult concepts and demonstrate normal and disease processes.

B. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe the major aspects of pathologic disease processes of the organs

(discussed in this course) including:
a. etiology of the disease
b. pathogenic mechanisms of development- sequence of events leading to the
manifestations of the disease
c. structural alterations from the genetic, molecular, cellular and morphologic
levels.
d. changes affecting the organ function.

2. Describe the general pathologic mechanisms

a. Review the major changes that occur in inflammation
b. Describe the blood cells involved in inflammation.
c. Describe the soluble mediators that are involved in inflammation and what
is their function.
3. Compare the macroscopic and microscopic differences between normal and
neoplastic cells.
4. Identify the steps involved in carcinogenesis.

5. Demonstrate understanding of pathologic processes and physiological

alterations of the major organ systems.
Evaluation of Learning
Two midterms and a final examination will be given- each Midterm worth 33%,
Final Exam -34%
There will be no extra credit projects offered.

Grading: This course will be graded on a letter basis as follows:
