KTMS-2500 is an alarm monitoring, data aquisition and control system. This system is
designed by standard modules communicating on serial instrument net, local area
network, and local operator network. It is adaptable for all types of ships.
The main purpose of the system is to give ship's officers all the basic alarms and
status information they require in order to maintain safe and efficient operation of the
machinery. The system is dual in structure for the sake of stability and reliance, and
designed for user to operate easily.
The system is designed to meet the classification society's requirements. The design
conforms to all rules and regulations, and all modules are type approved.
1.2 Purpose
Machinery status sensors are monitored by Local Signal Unit(LSU). This unit can
monitor a number of analog or digital type sensors.
Each Local Signal Unit contains dual microprocessors and is programmed to detect
sensors' signals for safe and efficient operation of machinery. Detected information is
continuously monitored by Central Display Unit via Local Operator Network.
When an unacceptable condition is detected, Central Display Unit generates an alarm
signal, and provides information about the condition for user to recognize that situation.
The data transmitted from Local Signal Unit is filtered by Central Display Unit and
selectively distributed to the monitor, printer, Operator Control Panel(OCP), Extension
Alarm Unit. Central Display Unit judges alarm status with filtered data, and in case of
alarm condition, it automatically sends alarm signals to the machinery space, the Bridge,
and engineers' quarters.
The Available data and the system control facilities provided at the various locations
are as follows.
Detail information on the type of alarm can be confirmed at the Central Display Unit
which has alarm and monitoring functions. Besides, detail information about the status
of machinery monitored by Local Signal Unit is also available at this unit.
If Local Signal Unit is isolated from the system by communication break-down, or it
sends abnormal data due to sensor fault, all the alarm and monitoring functions
associated with the machinery are supported at Central Display Unit. At this time, an
alarm is automatically generated, and visual and acoustic alarm signals are provided to
indicate normal alarms.
As soon as Central Display Unit detects an alarm condition, the alarm is displayed on
a monitor, a buzzer sounds, and Alarm Log Printer automatically writes out the alarm
details. By operating keyboard or track ball, more detailed alarm information is displayed
on the monitor.
Detail information related to any sensor or concerning alarm status data can also be
displayed on the monitor, or written out on the Logging Printer. Any analog sensor may
be presented as bar graph or a trend curve. Selected sensors may be logged
automatically at a fixed time interval on the printer. The system is able to display a
number of the latest alarms or all currently active alarms.
The Logging Printer and monitor record all status changes. A counter function is
provided to record running hours for engines, pumps and related items, and save their
past operation status. The counter values may be also displayed on the monitor or
written out on the Logging Printer.
Selection of duty engineer is carried out at Operator Control Panel, and in case of an
emergency, all available engineers, whether on duty or not, may be called to the Engine
Control Room.
Machinery watch may be changed from Engine Room watch mode to Bridge watch
mode with Operator Control Panel and Bridge Alarm Unit(BAU), and vice versa.
1.2.2.2 Bridge
Bridge Alarm Unit is provided for confirming alarm status, calling duty engineer, and
changing watch mode, etc.
When alarm condition arise, related information is indicated at the lamps on the front
of Bridge Alarm Unit, and detail information for alarm condition may be displayed
optionally on the Liquid Crystal Display(LCD). Alarm data is indicated with group alarm
lamps, and when an alarm is acknowledged in the Engine Control Room, or cleared,
appropriate indications are given to the Bridge Alarm Unit.
When the bridge is on machinery watch, one or more engineers must be on duty, and
the Bridge personnel may call the duty engineers from their quarter at any time.
The alarm indication of Cabin Alarm Unit(CAU) is presented in the same way as
Bridge Alarm Unit in the engineers' quarters.
When alarm condition arise, the alarm signal will cause a buzzer to sound and a lamp
to light, both in duty engineer's cabin and in the public area. The duty engineer would
then normally go to the Engine Control Room to find the cause of the alarm.
2. KTMS-2500 : MAIN SYSTEM
2.1 Overview
Main system of KTMS-2500 consists of following four units, and they serve different
tasks in an alarm, monitoring and control system
- Receiving and sending data from/to Local Signal Unit, and processing this data
- Alarm classification, presentation, and monitoring
- Sending alarm information to the Bridge and to the engineers' quarters
- Holding data in common with other main systems via network
- Record and output of alarm information
The main task of the CDU is to collect and process data from the LSUs, and
distribute the presentation of the processed data to the monitor. It receives status
information from the LSUs via Local Operator Network(LON), and displays this data on
the monitor for user to confirm the state of system easily. In addition, it compares data
with previously set value, and generates alarm signals.
User can operate various functions provided by the system with OCP, keyboard, and
track ball. OCP has functional buttons with lamps, with which user can notice whether
he would operate the button.
2.2 Alarm System
Alarm system, one of the main functions of KTMS-2500, allows user to recognize
abnormal operations of the ship. Alarm condition and output depend on the type of
channel and sensor, and can be classified as follows.
In case of the digital channel, the following functions are provided by alarm system.
In case of the analog channel, the following functions are provided by alarm system.
- Low alarm
- High alarm
- Instrument failure alarm
- Return to normal detection with dead-band to avoid alarm fluctuations
- Adjustable filter factors to filter fluctuations in the incoming signals
- Time delay of alarm triggering and return to normal messages
2.2.2 Inhibiting of Alarms
Some of the alarms will be inhibited when a specified condition is present. This
function is operated at the Central Display Unit both in the Bridge and in the Engine
Control Room by defining a signal as an inhibit signal for a specified alarm or a
specified group of alarms.
SBLK function is used in case that user will defines an inhibit signal for a specific
alarm without regard to the influences of the other channels. This function inhibits the
arising of the alarm unconditionally, and as a result, the subsequent alarm will be also
inhibited. Once an alarm is inhibited, the alarm is indicated as "SBLK" instead of "Alarm"
on the monitor in case of the alarm condition. If the appropriate channel is a normal
state, then it is indicated as "NORMAL" even if its inhibit signal is defined.
SBLK function is operated by setting the "AUTO SCAN" item to "OFF" in "Channel
Information Window“.
2.2.3 Alarm Detection
Alarm Detection depends on the types of the channels, and can be classified as
follows
In case of the digital type, open/close alarm will arise according to the alarm level of
the channel information.
In case of the analog type, low-low, low, high, high-high alarm will arise according to
the limit value of the channel information.
If the situation is not applicable to the conditions (1)~(2), then the normal state will
be kept.
2.2.3.3 ExhGas(Exhaust Gas) Channel
In case of the ExhGas type, low/high alarm will arise according to the limit value of
the channel information, and the detecting method is same to that of analog channel.
Unlike the analog channel, there are not low-low, high-high alarm in the ExhGas
channel, but deviation alarm. Deviation alarm arise when temperature deviation of the
gas exhausted from each cylinder of main engine goes out of the bound.
CDU calculates and displays temperature deviation of the exhaust gas, and the
deviation value of each cylinder is computed in comparison with the average value for
all cylinders.
User can adjust DL(Deviation Low), DH(Deviation High) values within a certain range,
which are the values for calculating the limit value of deviation alarm, and low/high limit
of deviation alarm can be generated with this values, as the following figure.
It is possible to inhibit deviation alarm for low limit, and deviation alarm will not arise
in case that the temperature of a cylinder go down below the low limit.

deviation at low alarm limit(200℃), and the alarm deviation will be decreased according
to the increase of the average temperature. The following figure shows the deviation
curve, and in this case, the present deviation is ±11℃ when the average temperature is
350℃.

In "Channel Status and Modification" window, user can confirm and modify the
information of each channel. The items which can be displayed and modified are
dependent upon the type of the channel, and the details are as follows.
When the alarm arise, it is displayed by a monitor and a printer for user to confirm
the alarm information : date, time, group number, description, and so on. It is also
displayed even when the alarm is cleared.
In case that the alarm is displayed on a monitor, it is shown by red when it arise,
and erased off the monitor when it is cleared. When an alarm arise, it is displayed on a
monitor as the following figure.

2.3 Display and Operation
Main system of KTMS-2500 is composed of 11 displays, and each display allows user
to grasp the state of the ship easily. It can be operated by keyboard, and mouse.
The construction and operation of each display are as follows.
"Alarm Display" displays all alarm information processed by the system on the monitor.
This is composed of the list of alarm status, alarm page button, the list of recent
alarms, buzzer stop button, alarm acknowledge button, alarm history button, and so on.
If an alarm arises, a buzzer sounds and the following information of the channel is
displayed on the monitor.
Alarm information is indicated by red, and will be flickering until the alarm is
acknowledged. User can confirm the details of the channel by activating "Channel Status
and Information" window with input devices such as keyboard and mouse.
The latest alarm is added to the top of alarm list. If a new alarm arises, its
information is indicated at the first column, and the others are shifted to the underside.
Alarm page buttons are indicated in proportion to the number of the alarms, and the
maximum is 8. Each alarm page can show 25 alarms, therefore the total number of the
alarms which can be shown is 200.
Each page is changed over by pushing the button, and the selected button turns
green. As an example, the following figure shows that a total of 8 alarms arose, and
the 1th page was selected.
The information of recent alarms is indicated at the lower left of the monitor, and even
if alarm display is changed over to other display, this list is always indicated. If a new
alarm arises, its information is added to the top of the list and the others are shifted to
the underside. So, the third column of alarm information is deleted.
If an alarm arises, a buzzer sounds, and "BUZZER STOP" and ”FLICKER STOP“
buttons light up, which are located in the lower right of the monitor. At that time, the
buzzer stops sounding by pushing "BUZZER STOP" button, and the new alarm
information is acknowledged and stops flickering by pushing ”FLICKER STOP“ button.
2.3.1.5 Alarm History Display
Alarm history is a record for all alarms that have arisen since the system had started
to operate. In addition, this includes the record for the release of the alarm. So, user
can know when the alarm has released as well as which type of alarm or when the
alarm has arisen. The construction of alarm history display is similar with that of alarm
display.
A total of 10000 alarms can be saved as alarm history. By pushing "F1" button in
alarm history display, the page is changed over to alarm display.
2.3.2 Operator Control Panel (OCP) Display
OCP display functions as operator control panel, Engineer controlling Extension Alarm
Unit, printing channel data, executing mimic diagram, etc..
2.3.2.1 Extension Alarm Unit (EAU) Control
On OCP display, user can request watch mode change, call engineer, and select a
duty engineer.
The Engine Room is the default watch responsible location. User can request the
change of the responsible location to the Bridge by pushing "W/H" button in "WATCH"
box. If there is an acceptance signal from the Bridge, the responsible location is
changed to the Bridge as "W/H" lamp lights up and "E/R" lamp goes out.
User can also select a duty engineer on OCP display. Each button in "DUTY
SELECTION" box can be changed over to On/Off state, and its lamp lights when the
engineer written on it is on duty. It is possible to select or release all buttons.
In case of calling an engineer, "Engineer Call" function is available. There are two
buttons in "ENGINEER CALL" box : "DUTY" and "ALL". "DUTY" button is used when user
call only a duty engineer, and "ALL" button is used when user call all engineers.
If one of the buttons in "ENGINEER CALL" box is pushed, then its lamp starts to
flicker, and that means "Engineer Call" function is in progress. By pushing the button
once more, "Engineer Call" function can be released.
There is a function to monitor and indicate the communication state with EAUs on
OCP Display. If the communication state is normal, the color of the appropriate lamp is
green. Otherwise it turns red.
It is possible to print the information of each channel on OCP display. The functions
supported in this item are as follows.
(1) Group Print
This function allows to group the information of the channels to be printed.
There are some buttons available in order to execute mimic diagrams on OCP display.
This buttons can be increased by the number of the diagrams offered in mimic display.
2.3.3 Group Display
On group display, it is possible to group the channels which have similar properties
into one group. The following table shows a tag and description of each group.
The channels are displayed with the different colors according to their states, and the
details are as follows.
States Color
Engineer select display is similar to group display in the function and the construction.
But on engineer select display, user can group only the channels which he verifies
frequently. In addition, user can create a new group, and add/delete the channels in the
group. On engineer select display, user can create maximum 8 groups, and modify the

appears, which shows all groups included in the system and the channels included in
each group, in the form of list. The list of the channels included in the new group is
displayed on the right side.
Item Description
1 Group Name Indicating all groups included in the system
Exhaust gas display shows the temperature of the gas exhausted from the cylinder of
main engine, in the form of bar graph. It includes the current temperature, the mean,
the deviation for the mean, etc..
The main engine is selected at the top of the monitor, and the temperature of the
exhaust gas for the selected main engine is displayed. The number of the main engine
to be selected is changeable according to the system.
If the main engine is changed, such items as the deviation, the mean, and the current
temperature of the cylinders will be recalculated.
Bar graph located in the top of the monitor shows the deviation of the temperature of
the exhaust gas for each cylinder, and the upper part shows deviation high limit(DHL),
and the lower part deviation low limit(DLL). The cylinder is judged as the normal state in
case that its deviation is within DHL and DLL, and the color of its bar graph is green.
When the deviation is out of DHL or DLL, the deviation alarm occurs and the bar graph
of the appropriate cylinder turns red.
The table on the right shows the current deviation alarm limit and low alarm blocking
level. In case that the average temperature of the cylinder is less than the low limit(20
0℃), the deviation alarm doesn't occur. In this time, the deviation alarm doesn't occur
even if the deviation of each cylinder is out of DHL or DLL, and the bar graph of the
appropriate cylinder turns yellow.
The graph at the lower part of the monitor shows the current temperature of the
exhaust gas for each cylinder. The left of the graph indicates the alarm limit of the
cylinder, and the right indicates the actual temperature of the exhaust gas. If the
temperature of the exhaust gas is out of the alarm limit, then an alarm occurs and the
color of the graph turns green from red. The current value of the temperature is written
at the top of each graph.
On the right side of the graph, there is another bar which indicates the mean of the
cylinders. The channel which corresponds to the mean has the low limit function, and is
its value is same to that of the deviation alarm off. Deviation alarm doesn't occur in
case that the mean of the cylinders is less than the low limit.
Each channel is indicated by the different color according to its state, and the details
are as follows.
States Color
Normal State GREEN
Alarm State RED
Deviation Alarm State YELLOW
On exhaust gas display, the status of the turbo charger can be also verified. The
number of the bars depends on that of the turbo chargers, and the indication way of
the graph is similar to the case of the exhaust gas for the cylinder.
User can verify the detailed information of each cylinder by selecting the appropriate
with a mouse, referring to the "Channel Information window".
2.3.6 Trend Display
Trend Display shows the trend in the change of the data acquired from the sensors.
The trend is shown in the graphic form according to time, and useful in analyzing the
past data
Trend Display is divided into text part and graphic part. At text part, the following
items of the selected channel is displayed, and the color of the text is defined
according to the channel.
The left slider is used to change the period to be displayed. The period will be
prolonged from the present up to 144 hours before, by moving the slider to the left with
a mouse. The right slider is used to zoom in/out the graph. The range of the graphs
will be expanded or reduced by moving the slider to the left or right with a mouse.
Similarly to the Channel Select Display, Trend Display is composed of 8 pages, and
each page is able to include up to 8 channels.
In order to add a channel to a page, user pushes the "SEL.CH" button at the upper
right of the monitor, and "Select Group & Delete" window appears. Its functions are

to "SEL.CH" button is pushed, it functions in the same way as that of "Engineer Select
Display".
The information of all channels is saved in the file named the combination of the
number of LSU and channel. It has “.dat” extension, and is located in the
"year month date" folder. For example, the file which stored the information at the 16'
17th, August, 2001, would be names as follows.
In this way, the information of all channels is saved in the file as real time, and is
used in drawing a trend curve.
2.3.7 View Display
View Display shows the value of the channel in the form of a meter or bar graph, of
which the type is analog or ExhGas. Because it is possible to construct pages freely
according to the item or alarm group, it is convenient to compare and analyze various
channels. The display method of each page is divided into meter mode and bar graph
mode. View Display is composed of 8 pages, similarly to the Trend Display, and each
page is able to include up to 8 channels.
In order to add a channel to a page, user pushes the "SEL.CH" button at the upper
right of the monitor, and "Select Group & Delete" window appears. Its functions are
similar to those of "Trend Display", but the function to select the display mode(meter
mode/bar graph mode) is added on View Display.
On View Display, it is possible to change the page's title. When "TITLE " button next
to "SEL.CH" button is pushed, it functions in the same way as that of "Engineer Select
Display".
2.3.7.1 Meter Mode
In meter mode, the value of the appropriate channel is displayed in the form of meter.
In addition, group number, the description, and the current value of the channel are
also shown.
A hand of the meter stands the current value, which is expressed in figures under the
hand.
The indications such as low limit, high limit, and full scale on the meter varies
according to the channel, and the maximum value of the scale is equal to "Full Scale"
value in the information of the appropriate channel.
"Low limit" part is from the minimum value of the scale to the low limit value, and
indicated by yellow. "High limit" part is from the high limit value to the maximum value
of the scale, and indicated by red.
In order to regulate the interval of meter's scale, user clicks the right button of a
mouse on the meter. One item can be selected among "Small", "Middle", and "Large",
and the initial values are as follows : "Small" is 10, "Middle" is 20, and "Large" is 40.
User can verify the information of channel with "Verification and Modification of
Channel State" window shown by double-clicking the meter with the mouse. If user
modifies the items such as full scale and limit values, the appropriate indications are
changed immediately on the meter.
In bar graph mode, the value of the appropriate channel is displayed in the form of

System Display shows the status of devices and networks included in KTMS-2500.
Each device is indicated in the form of icon, and the status of network is distinguished
by the color.
The system is dual in its structure for the sake of stability and reliance.
LSUs which include 32 channels are equipped in Engine Control Room, and the
number of LSU might be adjusted to such specifications of the vessel as the size,
capacity, the owner's demand, etc.. Two MCUs in charge of monitoring and controlling
are basically provided in Engine Control Room, and optional computers in charge of
only monitoring might be equipped in Cargo Room or other places.
2.3.9.1 Bridge
In Bridge, communication line of BAU is sure to be dual, but that of CAU is not
necessarily so. BAU(or CAU) communicates with CDU by RS-485.
BAU provides a function to transfer machine watch responsibility to/from Engine
Control Room. In case that the Bridge is on machine watch, at least one engineer
should be on duty. When an alarm occurs, a buzzer in duty engineer's room sounds,
and the lamp of the appropriate group turns on automatically.
The Bridge personnel can call the duty engineers from their quarter at any time, and
they can respond to the call with CAUs.
There are dual CDUs and Alarm Logging Printers in Engine Control Room. Between
two CDUs, the computer turned on previously will function as master which is able to
control as well as monitor, and the other will function as slave, which is able to only
monitor. If master is out of order or disconnected from the system, then slave changes
over to master immediately.
When an alarm occurs, a buzzer sounds, and the lamp of the appropriate group turns
on, and the printer automatically prints the details such as alarm group, date & time,
etc.. The lamp in LSU where the alarm occurs also turns on. If the state of the alarm
returns to normal condition, the appropriate lamp turns off.
CDU communicates with another CDU or Dummy Computer by TCP/IP, and with LSUs
by TCP/IP, LON, or RS-485.
2.3.9.3 Machinery Space
On System Display, "Self Test" window of LSU is shown by double clicking the icon
of LSU, and enables user to make a diagnosis of the components of LSU in the aspect
of hardware.
There are circular lamps on all devices such as CDU, BAU, CAU, and LSU, which
indicate the connecting status of network. If this lamp is green, it means that network is
normal. If red, it means that network is abnormal.
All devices dual in structure communicate with each other basically via A port. If the
connection by A port is broken down, it is automatically changed over to B port.
2.3.10 Config. Display
This function enables user to set date and time. Current date and time are indicated
in the form of text, and can be modified by operating the scroll under the text, and
pushing "OK" button. If "Cancel" button is pushed, the modification is canceled.
This function enables user to modify a password, with which user can change the
information of the vessel. Current password is written in the first blank, and new
password to be modified is written in the second and third blanks. To write a password
once more in the third blank is for a confirmation, and in case that the password
written in the second blank is equal to that written in the third blank, it is finally
modified by pushing "OK" button.
2.3.10.3 View Database
View Display allows to modify database which includes such the items related to the
channels of LSUs as group number, a type of channel, and the information of limit,
alarm, etc.
