Instructors Guide Course Description -1–

Description
This class provides a comprehensive overview of the extensive line of Caterpillar engines in the
3000 series range. The smallest engines in the family include the 3003, 3011, 3013, 3014 and
3024 in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 emissions form. The larger engines includes the 3034, 3044,
3046, 3064 and 3066 engines are covered in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 emissions forms. The last
group of engines is the latest electronically controlled 3054E/3056E engines, which are covered
along with background information on the serviceability limits of all models. Systems
operations, identification, and applicable test/adjust for all engines are highlighted in lab
sessions.

Objectives
After completion the participant will be able to:
• Identify the entire range of 3000 series engine families including;
o The 3003, 3011, 3013, 3014 and 3024 in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 versions.
o The 3034, 3044, 3046, 3064 and 3066 in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 versions.
o The 3054 and 3056 in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 versions.
• Define the limits of serviceability for all engine families.
• Explain systems operations and functions as well as identify changes to each engine
family to meet Tier 2 emissions levels.
• Perform systems adjustments and diagnostics where applicable.

Prerequisite: Students attending the class must be able to use Caterpillar Service Manuals and
service tools. The student should have a basic knowledge of diesel engines and diesel fuel
systems.
Students will be required to wear safety glasses, hearing protection, work clothing (no shorts
allowed), and hard leather sole shoes. No dangling jewelry or rings are allowed in the shop areas.
