Part 1
Questions 1–5

1 The correct answer is C: Anne and Eric have already arranged to meet at the theatre. The
update that Anne is giving Eric is that she may be late and she is also telling him that she
ordered the tickets online. A is not the correct answer because Anne is not asking for help from
Eric. B is not the correct answer because Anne is not telling Eric anything that he already knew;
all the information in the message is new information.

2 The correct answer is C: Places at the event are limited. The notice says: ‘Space for a
maximum of thirty students.’ Students must register quickly. The notice says, ‘sign up now’
straight after saying that there are not many places available. A is not the correct answer
because the notice is for ‘Final-year students.’ Students in other years are not invited. B is not
the correct answer because the talk is not about applying for jobs, it’s about ‘how to do well in
your first job.’

3 The correct answer is B: The sign says: ‘Glass, plastic and metal items (certain items) must
be cleaned (meaning washed) before you bring them to the recycling centre’. A is not the correct
answer because the items must be cleaned before they are brought to the recycling centre.
C is not the correct answer because the sign says ‘please place them in the correct recycling
bin’ (the word them meaning items). This means that there is a correct recycling bin for each
category of item; they cannot all be put in the same bin.

4 The correct answer is C: Gabriel asks ‘who else should I get tickets for?’ He wants Nora to
suggest other people who might want to go too. A is not the correct answer because Gabriel
says to Nora: ‘Besides you, who else should I get tickets for?’. This means ‘Apart from you, who
should I get tickets for?’. So Gabriel still hasn’t bought a ticket for Nora. B is not the correct
answer because Gabriel tells Nora she has to ‘wear their special headphones’ (the word ‘their’
meaning the organisers of the silent disco).

5 The correct answer is A: The notice asks customers to tell their waiter if they need
information. This means that the staff can let customers know about something. The information
is about ‘ingredients in any of our dishes’. This means that the information is about what has
been used to make the dishes. B is not the correct answer because the information is not on
the menu – customers have to ask a member of staff. C is not the correct answer because the
notice does not offer customers the option of choosing something different to eat. They can ask
about the food that is on the menu.

Part 2
Questions 6–10
6 The correct answer is D: Erika wants ‘to see a musical show which has famous actors in the
lead roles’. The End of Summer has ‘stars who you’ll probably recognise from TV.’ Erika would
also like the show ‘to be based on a book’. The review of The End of Summer says ‘you’ve
probably read the novel which this musical comedy takes its story from.’ Finally, she’d like the
show to contain ‘many different types of music’. The End of Summer has a ‘wide variety of
music.’ Overall, The End of Summer provides Erika with everything she wants.

The Amazing Mr Mason (C) may look possible, but it is not the correct answer because the
review doesn’t mention famous actors or different types of music.

7 The correct answer is H: Guillermo would like ‘to go to a show that’s funny’. The Final Whistle
is a ‘laugh-a-minute show’ and has ‘brilliant jokes’. Guillermo would also like the show to be
about a real person. The Final Whistle is ‘the true story of basketball player Andy Hammond’.
Finally, he wants to see a show with ‘more speaking than singing’. The Final Whistle ‘actually
has very few songs. You’ll love all the ... entertaining conversations’. Overall, The Final Whistle
provides Guillermo with everything he wants.

Keeping Time (E) may look possible, but it is not the correct answer because the review doesn’t
say that it’s funny, or that there is more speaking than singing.

8 The correct answer is F: Neelam wants ‘to see a musical show, which contains lots of special
effects’. No Exit uses ‘film and advanced technology to make it seem like the characters appear
in two places at once’. Neelam would like to watch the show in an unusual place. No Exit ‘is
performed in an old factory building’. People usually see shows in theatres, not in old factory
buildings! Finally, she’d like ‘to see a love story’. No Exit is a ‘romantic comedy.’ Overall, No Exit
provides Neelam with everything she wants.

Tiger Prince (G) may look possible, but it is not the correct answer because the review doesn’t
say that it’s a love story and the show isn’t performed in an unusual place.

9 The correct answer is B: Oumar wants ‘to go to a show that is a bit frightening’. In Mary
Wright, the music creates quite a scary atmosphere. Oumar would also like ‘to see a story set
in the past, with realistic costumes from the period’. Mary Wright is a 16th-century drama. The
review says ‘the clothes .... are historically accurate.’ Overall, Mary Wright provides Oumar with
everything he wants.

The Amazing Mr Mason (C) may look possible, but it is not the correct answer because the
review does not say it is frightening and doesn’t mention the costumes.

10 The correct answer is E: Mira wants to see ‘a show with dancing’. The review of Keeping
Time says: ‘there’s ballet in this show’. Mira wants the show to have ‘songs by well-known
musicians’. The review says that ‘Keeping Time is based on the real-life story of the popular
group Marcellous, and includes their best work’. Finally, she’d like the music ‘to be in a range
of styles from around the world’. The review says about the group Marcellous that ‘having
members from three different continents allowed them to create songs using music from each
place.’ Overall, Keeping Time provides Mira with everything she wants.

Glad! (A) may look possible, but it is not the correct answer because although it mentions a
famous musician, this is about the story. Also, the review doesn’t mention either dancing or
different musical styles.

11 The correct answer is C: In the first paragraph, Louise says: ‘I’d dreamt of visiting the area

A is not the correct answer because Louise says she doesn’t share her brother’s interest in boats.

great grandparents had lived in Canada, but she hadn’t been contacted by any relatives.

be all right.’A is not the correct answer because Louise knew from the forecast that the weather

organised, or whether this was usual or unusual for her.

13 The correct answer is A: In the third paragraph, Louise says she ‘focused on the beautiful
patterns our boat made in the water’. B is not the correct answer because Louise says that they

C is not the correct answer because Louise says that there were very few people in the area
and does not mention their houses. D is not the correct answer because they couldn’t see the
islands because of the fog.

14 The correct answer is D: In the fourth paragraph, Louise says ‘it was great to be able to stop
caring about how quickly or slowly the day was passing.’ A is not the correct answer because
Louise says that she didn’t recognise many of the fish she saw, but doesn’t say she learned their
names. B is not the correct answer because Louise says they all made their meals together and
never forgot lunch or dinner. C is not the correct answer because Louise says that ‘it really felt like
stress-free living’ even though the beds were hard. So she didn’t like the hard beds.

15 The correct answer is B: In the first paragraph, Louise says that she saw the west coast of
Canada on TV as a child and that her (and her brother’s) great grandparents had lived there.
A is not the correct answer because in the fourth paragraph, Louise says that they ‘often
stopped for hours to explore the rock pools on the beaches’.
C is not the correct answer because in the third paragraph, Louise says that they had ‘limited
supplies’, so they did not take too much with them.
D is not the correct answer because in the final paragraph, Louise says ‘how could I return to
normal life again?’ and although she mentions her friends and family, she doesn’t say that she
missed her work.
