1>2 How one screw compressor gives you

greater value than two reciprocating machines
in fuel gas boosting for gas turbines

1. No Standby Required.
Still thinking about reciprocating or centrifugal compressors
for fuel gas boosting? A Kobelco screw compressor is so
reliable, you won’t need to buy a spare. What’s more, the
screw design is inherently more economical to maintain.
You’ll get around six years of continuous operation between overhauls.
Plus you’ll have only one machine to maintain.

2. Save on Power.
Kobelco screw compressors feature an innovative slide valve that substantially reduces
power consumption – without steps – to handle fluctuations in turbine load (turndown
range: 100% to 20%) and suction pressures (up to 1,500 psig/100 barg). So you’ll continue
to conserve power and reduce costs every day.

Call Kobelco today to find out how one compressor can multiply your savings.

Trevor Holroyd, technical director,

which vibration will not. Although it

from vibration.”

Since 1934, MAN Turbocharger reliably has set the pace for pioneering innovations. It was MAN that first
introduced the plain bearing design for large turbochargers in 1940, the prevailing design concept until today.
Again, in 2008, MAN was a pioneer with the introduction of the variable turbine area VTA for heavy fuel oil
operated engines. With the turbo compound system with power turbine and generator TCS-PTG, MAN today
sets the pace for waste heat recovery systems for marine and stationary applications.

In the event of a stator remanufac-

This test sets a benchmark for the sta-

According to Rolls-Royce, the
operational benefits of a gas-fueled
propulsion system are a cleaner
engine room, less waste oil and no
switchover problems. The new gas
engines are also service friendly
and need less maintenance, the
company said.
The gas engines can operate on low
load without any restriction and have
a very quick and step-less ramp-up
time from zero to 100% load.
The fuel system is designed for
weekly bunkering intervals and the
bunkering time is estimated to be
45 minutes. Bunkering will be car-
ried out by the ship’s crew.
NOx emissions are lower at low
engine loads, which is the reverse
trend of most diesel engines, mak-
ing it the optimal solution for tugs
that are spending most of the time at
lower engine loads, said Rolls-Royce.
Rolls-Royce added that the envi-
ronmental benefits associated with
spark-injection engines include of-
fering 92% reduced NOx emissions,
17% reduced greenhouse gas emis-
sions, 98 to 100% reduced SOx emis-
sions, 98% reduced particulates, and
an absence of oil spill during bunker-
ing or in ship engine room bilges.
The company also said further ad-
vantages included a lack of sludge
from purifiers, no fuel oil waste,
leakage or spill oil (thus reducing
any fire risk), improved long-term
compliance with local port regula-
tions and potential benefits from
taxation/green port dues.
The vessels are designed by Buksér

five years. It is scheduled for com-

his company was using Austal
technology to support the next
phase of wind farm development,
which would see a much larger
number of turbines installed far-
ther offshore and in other areas
with rougher sea conditions.
“To do that, we need to be able to
transfer farther, and in larger waves,
while still providing the technicians

and safe turbine step-offs,” he said.
Bellamy said the new design
would improve the viability of off-
shore wind farms by overcoming
the seakeeping limitations of the
support vessels currently used in
the industry.
“To date, most wind farms have
been relatively close to the coast
and serviceable with fairly basic
boats. Now, as they move farther
offshore there is a need for a second
generation of vessels that can ad-
dress the significant challenges this
brings,” he said.
“As well as minimizing seasick-
ness among personnel and provid-
ing safer transfer conditions, the
new design’s enhanced seakeeping
performance can improve the eco-
nomics of offshore wind farms,”
said Bellamy.
“Being able to operate in a broader
spectrum of sea conditions increases
overall operability, which means
there is the potential to reduce the
