Coin Activity
Equipment Directions
Cup 1) Place an index card on top of an empty cup
Index 2) Place a coin on the card
card 3) Flick the card with your finger
Coin 4) Continue until the coin drops into the cup
Observations
The penny is at rest sitting on top of the card. When card is flicked out from under the
penny, gravity (an outside force) act on it and drop it into the glass. The glass stops the
coin from falling.
Questions
1) Which of Newton’s Laws are demonstrated by this activity? Explain what this law is all
about.
Law of inertia was demonstrated. It states that, “ an object at rest, and an object
in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
3) How you modify this activity so the coin travels with the index card?
Use or put less force in flicking the card so the coin will travel together with the
index card.
Group 2
Two Cans Activity
Equipment Directions
2 cans with 1. Make sure the 2 cans have different mass.
different mass 2. Place both cans in the ramp.
Ramp 3. Analyze the amount of force needed to increase the speed of the
two cans with regards to their masses.
Observations
The heavier object requires more force to accelerate at the same time compared to the lighter
one.
Questions
1) Which of Newton’s Laws are demonstrated by this Activity? Explain what this law is all
about.
Law of Acceleration was demonstrated. It states that, “ acceleration is directly
proportional to the force and inversely proportional to the mass.”
3) Why does the other can rolls faster than the other one?
The bigger can rolled faster because it has greater mass and force than the other.

Candle Seesaw Activity
Equipment Directions
1 candle 1. Pierce a hole in the middle of the candle.
matches 2. Balance the candle in the middle of two glasses or jars using the
1 needle or needle or nail.
long nail 3. Light up one end of the candle.
2 glasses or 4. Observe what will happen.
jars with the 5. Light up both ends of the candle using the matches.
same height 6. Observe what will happen.
Plate( to
catch the
dripping wax
Observations
The force from the dripping wax causes a change in mass causing movements to the candle.
Questions
1) Which of Newton’s Laws are demonstrated by this activity?Explain what this law is all about.
Law of interaction. It states that, “ for every action, there is an equal and opposite
reaction.”
2) What happened to the candle when you lighted up both of its side?
When both sides of the candle are lighted up, the candle started moving up and
down.
3) Explain what will happen if you only lighted one side of the candle.
When only one part of the candle is lighted, one side of the candle will go up
while the other one is down. The reason is because the force from the dripping wax
added mass on one side of the candle making it a little heavier than the other.
