Background
• Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) was an
English scientist and mathematician
famous for his discovery of the law of
gravity also discovered the three laws of
motion.
• Today these laws are known as Newton’s
Laws of Motion and describe the motion of
all objects on the scale we experience in
our everyday lives.
“If Ihave ever made any valuable discoveries, it has
been owing more to patient attention, than to any
other talent.”
-Sir Isaac Newton
Newton’s Laws of Motion
1. An object in motion tends to stay
in motion and an object at rest tends
to stay at rest unless acted upon by
an unbalanced force.
2. Force equals mass times
acceleration
(F = ma).
3. For every action there is an
equal and opposite reaction.
Newton’s First Law
1 lb is equal to 4.448 N.
Weight is Different from Mass
• Mass is a measure of the amount of matter
in an object.
• Weight is the gravitational force an object
experiences because of its mass.
• On earth a 66 kg astronaut weighs 66 kg X
9.8 m/s 2= 650 N (150 lbs). On the moon
where gravity is 1.6 m/s2, the astronaut
would weigh 66 kg X 1.6 m/s 2= 110 N (24
lbs). Weight changes but mass does not.
Net Force
75 N 300 N
300 N – 75 N will be
your net force.`

What is the force necessary for a 1.6 x 10
kg car to accelerate forward at 2.0 m/s 2?
