Hello, my name’s Karin and I go to

Walton Secondary School for Girls. I started Art Club
last week. It was great fun! The teacher showed
us how to make candles!

First, we looked at some beauiful candles from

the course last year – all different shapes and wax
colours – then he described how to make a basic
candle. We decided which kind of mould to use:
some were long and thin but mine was square.
Then we poured some oil inside so that it was easy
to take the candle out.
Ater that, we heated some wax unil it was
completely liquid. Then we added some colour – I used red because it’s
my favourite colour – and a scent – I wanted orange but the teacher
didn’t have that, so I used apple.
scent
We put a piece of short string called a ‘wick’ in the mould, then poured
the wax in. Then we waited for the wax to cool and go hard.
My candle wasn’t perfect. There were some holes and the
colour was brown not red, but I was pleased with it! I decided
to give it to my mother as a present!

Unusual ways to get to school
The Los Pinos zipline
The children of Los Pinos, Colombia, don’t go to school by bus, and don’t
take the train. There are only two ways to leave the village – they can walk
for two hours or take a one minute zipline ride! Eight children use the zipline
every day to go to school and return home. It’s four hundred metres long,
and people can travel across it at 62 kilometres per hour. It looks like fun,
but the river is 360 metres below them when they cross – so it’s scary, too!

Danger every day If they don’t want to walk for four hours, the only way children
from the small village of Zhang Jiawan in China can get to
school is to climb down long ladders to the valley below. ‘My
parents showed me how to do it’, said one little girl. ‘It’s very
high and I was scared the first time I did it, but I tried not to
look down!’ The people of the village asked for a road, but it is
too expensive.
Cameron and his unicycle
Cameron Peacock from Stockton,
England, doesn’t walk to school,
or go by bike – well, not a
normal bike. He gets there on
a bicycle with just one wheel!
Every day, he travels five and a
half kilometres on his unicycle.

going to bring crisps and a rice salad that Mum’s making. I can
come with you to the shop if you want to buy some things
before we go. The party starts at 8 pm and finishes at
midnight. I have to be back home at 11 pm because Dad is
giving me a lift and he doesn’t want to be too late.
Let me know if you want to come!

Superlatives
5 Complete the sentence below with the superlative form, then check on page 74.

No, it’s 1..................................................... (bad) headache in the world!

We use superlative adjectives to compare more than two things. The form depends on
how many syllables the adjective has. Read the examples and complete the rules below.
He’s the oldest boy in the class.
It was the happiest day of my life.
It’s the most dangerous animal in the world.
He’s the best in the class.
It’s the worst film in the world. It’s terrible.

a) If the adjective has one syllable, add 1....................................

b) Spelling: some adjectives double the final letter, e.g. (hot) It’s the hottest day of the year.
If the adjective ends in –y, the letter ‘y’ is replaced with 2.................................... .
c) With adjectives of more than two syllables, we use the words 3....................................

1 Read about these accidents and answer the questions below.

A Mike: I was about ten years old. I was playing with my

friends in the garden. My father was at the top of a ladder. He
was painting a bedroom window. Suddenly, there was a crash.
The grass turned white and so did we! Then the top of the ladder
slowly moved away from the wall and my father fell. I watched
in horror – everything happened very slowly, like a slow replay
on TV. I think my father jumped because he landed on the grass,
rolled over in a beautiful somersault, and stood up. ‘Well,’ he
said, ‘ that’s the quickest way to come off a ladder, but not the
safest!’

B Gill: This was one of the most embarrassing

moments of my life. I was fifteen. We were on
holiday, staying with my mother’s friends who lived
near a beach. Her sons had their own horses and, of
course, were good riders. One day, they suggested
going for a ride along the beach. Of course, I agreed,
but I didn’t say that I didn’t know how to ride. All went
well for a little while. We didn’t go fast and I managed
to stay on the horse until we stopped for a rest. Then,
I leant forward to say something and, at the same
time, the horse put his head down. I slowly slid over his head and landed on the sand. The boys were
laughing. I laughed, too, but I didn’t feel like laughing at all!

Building team spirit
Spirit of Adventure Trust
The Spirit of Adventure Trust started in New Zealand. It allows young people
to work on a ship and learn about sailing, the sea - and themselves! There
is an exciting programme of activities on the ship, on the water and on land.
Forty young people spend ten days on the sailing ship, Spirit of New Zealand,
developing their skills as leaders. On the last day of the voyage, the young
people sail the ship themselves, without the help of the adults on board.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award started in the UK. Now young
people from all over the world can join it if they are between the ages of 14
and 24. To achieve the Award, young people volunteer within their community,
practise a skill, play a sport and plan and go on an adventurous journey with
friends. There are three different levels for the Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Junior Forest Wardens, Canada
The Junior Forest Wardens’ programme in Canada teaches children to enjoy the
outdoor life. They camp, backpack, canoe, go mountaineering, plant trees and
more! To prepare for activities like these, they learn about first aid and survival.
Older members teach them to identify trees, plants and animal life. They also
learn about the weather! They go on an outdoor trip every month. Geoff, a
young warden, told us, ‘We were eating our dinner one evening when a young
bear walked into the camp. That was scary!’
Singapore Red Cross Youth
Many young people in Singapore are in the Red Cross Youth organisation. They
learn first aid but also do many different activities that teach them to live and
work together. They also work for their community and make contact with other
Red Cross Youth organisations around the world. As one member said, ‘One
day I was walking along the street when I saw an accident. I didn’t know what
to do! That’s when I decided to join the Red Cross Youth. Now I love it!’

Reading
1 Read these extracts from the commentaries of two other videos in the competition, then
answer the questions below.

Hi, I’m Julia and I live in Bradford on Avon.

If you like small, historic towns, you will love
Bradford on Avon in the west of England. Many
of the houses here are more than 400 years old.
Until the 17th century, Bradford on Avon was
the centre of the textile industry and a very rich
town but, during the Industrial Revolution, many
factories moved to the North of England.
Today, Bradford has a beautiful old town centre
with nice shops and restaurants. If you like
walking and exploring, you will find the
spectacular Cheddar Gorge caves and the
beautiful city of Bath nearby. It also has its own
Arts Festival every year. Many tourists visit during
the summer to enjoy its beauty and peace.

Hi, I’m Andy and I live in York, a big city in the north of England.
If you like old cities, you will
enjoy visiting York in the
north of England. There are
lots of great attractions for
tourists. If you walk around the
city at night, you will see people
on ‘the night walks’ around the
city centre with a guide telling
them stories of terrible things
that happened there – murders
and ghost stories. It’s scary but
interesting!
There are also lots of shops, If you like music, you will love the National Centre for Early
restaurants, schools and a great Music which has many old instruments and information about
university where you can study modern music and music of the past. My favourite thing, though, is the
television, theatre and film. steam train ride. It’s great fun!

2 Which place is bigger? .............................................................................

pressure on a map. The closer the isobars are, the windier it is.
4 .................................................................... A warm front is where warm air meets cold air and rises
above it. This causes rain. A cold front is where cold air meets warm air and goes under it,
pushing the warm air upwards, this also causes rain!
