1. Start reviewing NOW (at least 5 min. per day). That is, every time you sit down to study, take a
little bit of time to go back over the materials you’ve already gone over. If you can’t recall important
details without looking, then you should spend more time with that subject again. Do you take notes
when you watch the videos? You Should! Go back over them!
2. MEMORIZE your tables, basic vocab definitions, verbal operant flow charts, jack michael
charts, etc. --though you cannot walk into your exam with these things, if you memorize them,
you can reproduce them from memory on a blank scrap paper AFTER the test starts (the real
certification exam will give you a blank white board(s) to write on).
3. Ask questions out loud where your understanding isn't clear; ask yourself and/or
on your supervisor or study partners.
6. Having a hard time getting started? Managing time? Try graphing your own study time
duration. Use a stop watch. Set goals (e.g., 90 minutes per day spent with material). Stop
timer when you daydream, eat food, or go to the bathroom. Remember to restart the timer
when you get back on track. Use conservative estimates. Set up a reward system for
yourself (ask your family for help if possible). “Premack it.” Graph daily. Have bonus
rewards in case you go far beyond your typical study goal. (cumulative graphs are great for
this, btw!).
7. Out of study materials? Been through ALL the materials, and still not doing well on
the tests? Nonsense! You can and should go over the same materials
REPEATEDLY. That’s right! Try re-reading/reviewing your study materials 2 or 3 (or
5 if need be!) times before you take your next test!
