Assignment Briefing Sheet – Aerospace Assembly Task Ref-Def

Mounting of Optical Sensor
Figure 1 shows an optical sensor turret that is to be mounted so it projects from the underside of
the skin of an aircraft. Figure 2 shows the bulkhead which is available to mount it from, and
Figure 3 shows the bulkhead with the adjacent section of external skin. The compartment is not
pressurised.
The base of the sensor, shown by the larger flange on Figure 1, is fixed and has mounting holes
as shown. The remainder of the turret can rotate along an axis normal to the base.
Your task is to design a mounting to hold the sensor in the correct position. The required field of
view is 180 degrees downwards, from a horizontal plane through the centre of the radius 4.0
shown on the sensor drawing, and this must be clear of the aircraft. It may be assumed that the
attachment of the skin panel to the bulkhead represents the lowest point of the nearby structure.
You will need to cut the skin to clear the sensor, such that it is free to rotate as described above.
However, you will also need to make provision to prevent significant ingress of water and dust
through the cutout, whilst avoiding undue friction on the rotating component.
The sensor has a cable to provide power and signal paths. This is ¼ inch diameter flexible cable
(not shown on the drawing), which needs to be routed to the top right corner of the bulkhead as
seen on the main view of Figure 2. It must be secured in place. The cable is to exit the sensor
from any point on the side of the fixed base.
It should be assumed that the bulkhead does not provide sufficient stiffness to support the loads
from the sensor and its mounting (see overleaf), so you will need to consider adding stiffening
members to the bulkhead as required.
You should show important dimensions on parts. It is not necessary to show any dimensions
already given, such as those for the sensor, except where they aid the clarity of your drawings. A
bill of materials is to be included on your drawing, prepared in such a way as to give an adequate
definition of all parts. Any part that is special to your design should be drawn separately in
sufficient detail to allow its form and function to be understood. Any bought-in parts, including
the sensor itself, should be clearly identified on the parts list, giving the manufacturer/supplier
and its part number as applicable.
The loads on the various parts may be estimated from the information given below. You may
assume that the components shown are adequately designed to withstand these loads, except as
stated above, but you must ensure that your design is of adequate strength. However, it is not
necessary to submit any calculations, and you should do sufficient only to satisfy yourself
that your design is adequate in this respect. This task is mainly about drawing a general
arrangement (GA), and you should keep calculations to a minimum. Remember though that any
excess material is adding unnecessary weight and represents poor design.
NOTE: Since potential customers include the US Department of Defense, the design must be in
inches, and must use unified (imperial) fasteners throughout.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR SUBMISSION?

You must produce an Orthogonal 3-view 2D Assembly Drawing showing all relevant
features and dimensions including:

1) The assembly drawing with key parts of your mechanism. Use additional views,
sections and other methods, as appropriate, to describe your solution fully.

2) Assembly Notes/Instruction.

3) BOM (with any/all relevant information).

4) Exploded view showing the components used for the assembly.

5) Appropriate placement of the balloons to identify all the parts/sub-assemblies.

6) Drawing sheet numbers as required.

You must produce 2D part drawings of all the parts you have design (conforming to
British Standards 8888:2017) for manufacturing.

1) Correct scale selection on the appropriate views and the title block along with any
annotation.

2) Correct selection of sheet size and border.

3) Correct information in title block with an appropriate size of the title block relevant to
the sheet size.

4) All the correct and appropriate dimensions of the part.

5) Any section views, detail views, part section views, broken views etc.

Note: The drawing package must contain:

i) An isometric view with an appropriate scale.

ii) Title block should include all the essential information like material, the angle of
projection, assignment name, weight etc. Use imperial units for dimensioning.

iii) Part drawings of all the parts you have designed.

Note: Marks are awarded for the effectiveness, lightness and overall quality of your design, and
the quality, clarity and completeness of your drawings.

Instructions for submission:

i) The title block must NOT contain your Name or StudyNet Login ID. Only SRN are
acceptable. You will be penalised 1% if you write your name or login ID on the title
block.

ii) Do NOT take a ‘screenshot’ of the drawing and paste into MS Word  save it to PDF
and then submit. You will be penalised 1% if you submit a screenshot.

iii) After you are satisfied with the amount of information on the drawing, save the 2D
drawing file in PDF format using the ‘save as’ facility on the CAD software. The file
name should be your SRN.PDF. You will be penalised 1% if you submit the pdf file
with the wrong file name.

iv) Ensure that the scale is not distorted while you convert your drawing to PDF format.

v) You must submit a drawing of all the parts and the assemblies in PDF format online on
CANVAS.

vi) The deadline for submission is 29th June 2020 BEFORE 2330.
