Candidates explore, evaluate, synthesize, and apply methods of inquiry to enhance learning and
improve performance

5.1 Candidates demonstrate foundational knowledge of the contribution of research to the

past and current theory of educational communications and technology.

Throughout the ETEC program and the 5203 course, we studied and researched past and
current technologies that represent educational technologies and the different theories and
communications involved. Constructing the Review of Literature during the ETEC 5203 course,
helped me, the writer, understand how finding the proper research can greatly impact what and
how you are writing. Compiling all of the necessary primary and secondary sources for this
assignment helped me to properly decide which aspects of the research were most important and
could help guide the organization of the paper in regard to resources and information given.
These sources help me reflect on the past and current research of assistive technologies and their
benefits in secondary special education students in English content areas.

5.2 Candidates apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice.

For this Review of Literature, I utilized the University of Arkansas research database to
collect 30 different research articles to help in writing this paper. Learning how to use key terms
in a research database helped me effectively search for items that pertained to my topic of using
assistive technologies in a special education environment, specifically English content areas.
With this being said, I used appropriate key terms to strengthen my searches, and my sources. I
then evaluated the sources based on whether or not they pertained to the special education
population, using assistive technologies, or they were too outdated.

5.3 Candidates apply formal inquiry strategies in assessing and evaluating processes and
resources for learning and performance.

In the Review of Literature, I collected various resources to help investigate and

understand assistive technologies with a certain population of special education students. This
research that was collected help me better assess and evaluate what types of technologies are out
there for these students and how they help or impose on the SPED students learning. I conducted
research to discuss barriers of assistive technologies, their implementation, understanding the
technologies, and their benefits. This research allowed me to use different inquiry strategies to
help assess and evaluate the content presented in the paper.

5.4 Candidates conduct research and practice using accepted professional and institutional
guidelines and procedures

For my Review of Literature, I made sure to follow the different professional and institutional
guidelines to ensure I had the best assignment possible. I followed APA guidelines for overall
formatting including text, font, and citations. Also, for my citations, I organized them so that
they are in order regarding the topic they support. Additionally, I made sure to properly cite my
sources in-text and at the end as well, so the proper credit is given. It is important to know and
understand all professional and institutional guidelines when conducting a large research paper
or any paper at all. It can help to better writing and the practices that go with it, overall.
