ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION

SYSTEMS FOR HEALTH CARE The normal electrical system

FACILITIES IS BASICALLY DIVIDED (non-essential).
INTO TWO SUB-SYSTEMS
The essential electrical system.
Which is ?
01
The non-essential electrical system consists of distribution
equipment and circuits that supply electrical power from the

NON- normal power supply to loads that are not deemed essential
to life safety, or the effective, and essential operation of the
hospital buildings

general lighting, general lab equipment, non-critical service

equipment, patient care areas, etc.
01
alternate power supply (or supplies), transfer equipment,
distribution equipment, and the circuits required to assure
continuity of electrical service to those loads deemed as

ESSENTIAL
essential to life safety, critical patient care, and the effective
operation of the health care facility.

Electrical System 02
Essential electrical system include three different types as
follows:
1. Essential Electrical System: Type 1-ESS.
2. Essential Electrical System: Type 2-ESS.
3. Essential Electrical System: Type 3-ESS
ESSENTIAL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS (EES) TYPE 1

Have the most stringent requirements for providing continuity of

Concept and Definition electrical service

Required to have a minimum of two independent sources of

electrical power which is a normal source that generally supplies
the entire facility and one or more alternate sources that supply
power when the normal source is interrupted.

The alternate sources must be an on-site generator driven by a

prime mover unless a generator exists as the normal power source
How?

UNDERSTAND
The Type 1 EES consists of three separate branches
capable of supplying power considered essential for life safety and
effective facility operation during an interruption of the normal power

MORE source.

What?
The Type 1 EES consists of two sub-system that capable of supplying
power considered essential for life safety and effective facility
operation during an interruption of the normal power source.
