properties has developed a high demand in recent times.
Our international pioneers like Arcelor Mittal,
thyssenkrupp, POSCO, JFE and Indian steel companies
TATA Steel and Essar have already set remarkable footings
in High Strength Mn Steel. Manganese and Boron both
provide properties like good hardenability, wear resistance
along with good formability. Development and progress in
producing of FLAT Steel products is a resemblance of the
prosperity in any economy and society. In light of this Mn-B
steel Hot rolled coil have picked up demand for diverse
applications. Earlier many of the businesses who used
rejected RAILS as an alternative have slowly shifted to HR
coil in the above grade. World over Mn and Mn-B steel
finds diverse applications.

Quenchable boron steels represent a breakthrough in heat treatment
technology. These steels use boron as a hardening agent. Quenchable boron
steel attains a remarkable degree of hardness and a very uniform
microstructure resulting in excellent mechanical loading performance after
heat treatment of the finished part.

After heat treatment

Their extreme hardness after heat treatment makes these grades
particularly suitable for applications requiring high wear/abrasion
resistance. Their use allows significant weight saving (up to 50% compared
with an HSLA grade) in structural and automotive components.

The grade has huge potential in International Market and in India. With rising demand of
high strength with low weight considerations for cost savings, the importance of the
grade is going to rise in future. Agriculture is slowly becoming modernized in India with
the use of earlier rejected rails into making of agricultural harrow discs, the market is
rapidly shifting to Flat product HR Coil for attaining of better properties. Also, rapidly
rising auto sector is an untapped segment for SAIL in HR.

Leads made in SAIL

The undersigned along with SRM Bokaro had concluded a meeting with Plant officials
and RDCIS for production of above grade. The issues were discussed and the production
capabilities were assessed. The sample fetched from one of the customer M/s Beri
Udyog Pvt Ltd was tested and analysed.

Techno-economics and process chart has been prepared and only Trial Heat is to be
produced.
