Subject: CAD Project

Hi Angela. Over the summer I had to do a 3D design professional development and came across the
project that I think we could collaborate on if you'd be interested the students would be designing and
printing out a 3D house using SketchUp let me know what you think .
Thanks
Mr. Salber

That sounds great I just have to check with the standards to make sure that they fit in. It sounds like it
would fit in with my geometry unit. I attached the geometry standards for MSDE. As long as it lines up I
think we could do it.

6.G Geometry

6.G.A Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

6.G.A.1 Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by
composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in
the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

6.G.A.2 Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit
cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be
found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas V  lwh and V  Bh to find
volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and
mathematical problems.

6.G.A.3 Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to
find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.
Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

6.G.A.4 Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the
nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world
and mathematical problems.

My biggest concern is it might make things a little bit more complex than they need to be. We use a
different system in the PD which I know allows you to find the area and volumes of objects are designing
in CAD. I am not sure if SketchUp has the same features. I will look into it and get back to you it will
allow you to do 6.G.A.3 but I'm not sure if you think this whole project for what one standard would be
worth it.

Yes, that would be a lot but are you planning to teach CAD anyway to your students? What if I taught my
lessons 1st and then you were able to use the tiny house project you showed me to reiterate the
concepts in a real-world format.

Yes, I was planning to cover it anyway, but let me run this idea by you. Why not use this for your STEM
Night project since we have to have a presentable for the parents to see. I can still cover the CAD and
you can go over the main concepts and then they can blend the two to create elaborate geometric
shapes or the tiny houses to print out on our 3D printers. Then those can be presented to the parents
for STEM Night?

That's a fantastic idea. It's always hard for the Math Department to come up with a tangible product to
display this would make my job a lot easier. Thank you, let's do it

Hi Mr. Salber. Quick question with the CAD program. Is it possible to use inches and feet or is it just in
centimeters and meters for the SketchUp?

That's a great question, you can actually set it for a few different types of measurement it's a simple fix
to toggle from centimeters and meters to inches in feet. I'd be happy to give you in the Class A tutorial
on it, or I can make and send you guys a video.

Thanks, could you just make me the video my one class looks like it will be a few days behind the other
one And I don't want to take up too much of your time.

Sorry to bother you again Mr Salber, but do you think that SketchUp could do some dimensions for
measurement, like traditional blueprints.

Absolutely! That's what a lot of the CAD software is made for. It's a little tricky to use but I can have it set
up to show length, width, height right on their screens with their Computer Aided Designs. Is that
something that you'll need me to go over in class with them?

Actually, I'd like it if you could go over it with my class since you don't have all of the students in my
math class it would be perfect for upcoming unit on area.
