Rate Law 2 Extra Material

Look at equation #4 in the lab handout. It is of the formula y = mx +b, the equation for a straight line.
ln k is y, ln A is the y-intercept b, x is 1/T, and the slope is (-Eact/R). If you have at least two sets of 1/T
and ln K data you can get the equation for the line. With this equation, you know the slope from which
you can solve for Eact.

In this experiment you will determine k at several temperatures and use this data to get the equation for
the straight line. You already have the rate law from rate law 1 experiment and also how to get the rate
of reaction.

2I-(aq) + H2O2(aq)  I2(aq) + 2H2O(l) (done in acid solution)

Rate = k[H2O2]1[I-]2 From rate law 1 experiment

Rate of Reaction = [S2O32-]/(2 x time)

In this lab you will do six identical experiments except that they will be done at three different
temperatures, two experiments for each temperature.

We are changing the reaction mixtures from those given in the lab handout to these below.

Sum of Y = -10.1877
Mean X = 0.0034
Mean Y = -1.698
Sum of squares (SSX) = 0
Sum of products (SP) = -0.0013

Regression Equation = ŷ = bX + a

b = SP/SSX = 0/0 = -5875.39888

a = MY - bMX = -1.7 - (-5875.4*0) = 18.43117

ŷ = -5875.39888X + 18.43117

Equation for line

ŷ = -5875.39888X + 18.43117
Use this equation to get Eact for the reaction (remember, the slope of this line equals -Eact/R).

Eact is (give units)

48848 J.mol-1
