REMOTE ACTIVITY IV - PHY 241/243

Work-Energy Theorem
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Method to apply the theorem of Kinetic energy on the real physical system.
II. Theory And Explanation

Change in Kinetic Energy is equal to the Work Done. It’s idea is clear after
reading the example of pulley in a manual. We take different masses and
repeat the experiment many times.
Some of the formulas that we used in calculations:
1 2 1 2
1. ∆ E kinetic =∆ E falling mass + ∆ Erotor = m v f + I ω f
2 2
vf
2. v f =ωf R ⇒ω f =
R
2h
3. v f =
t
v f is the final speed of a mass, t is the time and w f is the angular
frequency. The Data in Table A is collected through experimentation.and
Table is formed by performing the changes asked by an instructor and the
further process is done.

PROCEDURE / EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS

Use Excel and the data provided in Table A to complete the following steps.
1. Copy the information from Table A into an Excel file and label it
“Table A”.
2. Create a second table and label it “Table B”. It should include the
following:
a. The radiusRof the rotor drum expressed in meters.
b. The height hexpressed in meters.
c. The hanging mass values expressed in kilograms.

d. The finalspeed of the mass expressed in meters/second.You can input this type of
calculation in Excel by either creating a column with the same value for h or
creating an absolute reference of the cell with the value h.
For example, if h is in cell A1 and the time values are in cells B1 through B10, you would input:
=2*$A$1/B1 and then click and drag to obtain all velocity values. https://www.excel-
easy.com/functions/cell-references.html
e. The final rotational speed of the mass expressed in radians/second.This calculation
may also require an absolute reference for the radius R.
f. The final translational kinetic energy expressed in joules.
g. The final rotational speed kinetic energy expressed in joules.
h. The work done by the gravitational force expressed in joules.
i. The change in kinetic energy of the system.
3. Plot the change in kinetic energy. versuswork W. Add a trendline
and display the equation on the graph.

I. QUESTIONS
1. What is the experimental value of the slope?
Slope is 2.9768
Slope= y/x

2. Based on the work-kinetic energy theorem what is the expected slope?

Expected slope is near to the calculated. Experimental slope is 3.07

3. Discuss the consistency of your results with expected value from the work-
kinetic energy theorem. Discuss possible sources of error in the experiment.

Change in the kinetic energy is due to the environmental effects on the

experiment. When we do the work practically, things will be different from
reality.
