COVID-19 Follow-Up; Temporary Proactive One Week

Closing

Dear Parents,

In the best interests of your children, families and our staff, we have determined to
proactively close the school this coming week. This decision was not made lightly.
However, due to the circumstances, this will enable us to have the entire staff tested
and all the results returned, determine the children who need to be tested and
quarantined and allow families to seek testing and receive results.  We will be applying
a week's tuition credit to all accounts.

We have had half of our staff tested (27 individuals).  As stated, (2) Infant 2 teachers
and (1) Infant 4 teacher had tested positive. Additionally, (1) Toddler 2 and (1) Early
Preschool Teacher have received positive results.  I want to point out that these
teachers were not symptomatic in the school and were not cross exposed to one
another.  As such, it is highly unlikely they passed it to the Toddler and EPS teachers.
***(I will be sending a separate blast about exposures).

Importantly, both of our schools saw no illnesses, child or staff, outside of a very few
standard expected infections (sinus, ear infections, hand, foot, mouth, etc) from
March until just over a week ago.  It was actually the healthiest Spring!  Since then,
we have had a number of sick children and runny noses.  Children have returned after
48 hrs. with a Dr.'s note.  From this point on, if a child is sent home with a fever and
any other symptom, we will require a COVID-19 test prior to return.  I do not like to do
this; however, we are informed many Pediatricians are not testing without this type of
request.

I understand no one wants to upset their child.  Any test, or even Dr.'s appointment,
can be upsetting to little ones.  However, there is a greater concern and risk involved
at this time.  As for the test, the nasal antigen test is the most accurate.  It is a thin
swab that goes into the nasal cavity (not very deep).  It is similar to the throat swab.
Most find it less invasive as there is no gag reflex involved.

The State is seeing a massive surge in cases, with daily record numbers over the past
week.  No one can know where or when the virus is contracted.  It does seem that the
more the State "opened up" the higher the case count, especially as we are a tourist
destination.  Everyone is being exposed to more and more potential contact.

As stated in previous emails, many of us have been tested more than once.  Testing is
not full-proof outside of receiving a positive result.  Testing provides results for that
"window of time."  Thus, you can go for screening, leave, go to the store or meeting,
be exposed and pick up the virus all before receiving your negative result from an
earlier test.  That, coupled with the fact that a significant number of individuals are
asymptomatic, is what makes this virus so frustrating - and scary for those who are
high risk.  This is why it is imperative that we do everything we can to keep our
individual, home and school environments as risk-free as possible.

Many of you have emailed asking about travel over the 4th of July or visits with
Grandparents.  The State still has mandatory quarantine requirements for New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut and Louisiana.  This includes any flight layovers or transports
stops (car, train or boat) in those states.  We are also requiring mandatory quarantine
for Miami/Dade, Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Please email me separately if you
have specific questions regarding your travel plans at susan@ksmschools.com..

I strongly encourage you to evaluate all plans travel as well as contact with others,
especially any high risk individuals.  We are all "over" this virus and being restricted.
We all miss family and friends.  However, the potential is still everywhere to pick up
and pass this virus on.  I can keep our schools as safe as possible but it remains a
partnership.  We need help ensuring everyone coming into the facility is limiting their
exposure as much as possible.  In this manner, we can best keep those we care about
and our community as healthy as possible and as free from this virus as possible.  We
can keep the school open for you to be able to work and know your child is being cared
for in a safe environment.  It does take a village!

Thank you for all of your ongoing support and encouragement.  It really has helped
make this significantly more bearable as we have tried to work through this difficult
and unprecedented issues.

Sincerely,

Susan
