Activity One

Inform your students they will be performing one-legged balance drills.

Tell them:

lift your right leg off the ground and stand only on your left leg.

Wait 60 seconds and see who is still standing on one leg.

Now switch and do the same thing with the students standing on their right legs.

Allow them to rest. Ask them:

Which leg was it easier to stand on? Why?

Activity Two

Explain to your students they will be pretending to walk a highwire stretched across the Grand
Canyon.

Draw a line on the blacktop or sidewalk with chalk (or use a balance beam).

Now have your students walk along the chalk line slowly, one at a time, so that with each step, the
heel of the leading foot touches against the toe of the back foot from the previous step. Tell them:

Try not to look down, as it's a long way down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

You can hold your arms out for balance if you wish.

If you step off the line or fall sideways, there is no safety net.

Now see if you can do it backwards!

Activity Three

Tell your students they will be playing a game called 'Rocks and Alligators.'

Lay down the precut 'rocks' along the floor.

Tell your students:

You must hop from one rock to the next without missing, because the water is full of hungry
alligators.

You are not allowed to jump to a rock occupied by another student.

Now see if you can hop backwards!

Activity Four

Let your students know they will be balancing books on their heads.

Have them place books of various sizes and weights on their heads and walk very slowly.

If a student drops the book, they are out of the game.

Have them walk faster so more students are eliminated.

Have them speed up and move faster again.

The last student not to drop the book is declared the winner.
