And Emission!

Standard for Better Emission
 OBD = On Board Diagnostic Reporting System
 OBD-I = Level 1 Std => Not really a standard,
each manufacturer had different method of
reporting system and different Diagnostic
Connectors.
 OBD-II = Level 2 Std => Std Diagnostic Port,
Full Control for Engine Ops, Chassis, and
accessories.
1. (Reserved)
2. SAE-J1850 (+) => Ford, GM.
3. (Reserved)
4. Chassis Ground
5. Signal Ground
6. CAN (high) => New Standards in 2008 for all.
7. K-Line => Chrysler, European, Asian.

 STRINGENT EMISSION CONTROL
 Catalytic Converter efficiency (2 Oxygen Sensors)
 Engine misfire
 Electrical Integrity
 Idle Control
 Throttle Position Sensors
 Transmission actuators
 …….. Many more ………….
The Quest for POWER
 Optimizing A/F ratio and ignition timing for part and
full throttle acceleration.
 Optimizing A/F ratio for Cruising.
 Remove Flat Spots (Smoothing Drivability).
 Slightly Increase RPM Limiter.
 Remove Speed Limiter.
 Optimize Torque Limiter.
 Adjust Ignition Timing.
 Adjust Fuel Compensator.
 Adjust Boost (for Turbo / SC applications).
 AFM Calibration
 Throttle Position vs Fuel Enrichment
 Many… many… more….
 Pre-OBD => Re-chipping.
 OBD-I => Re-chipping or Re-flashing thru
Proprietary Diagnostic Connector (Serial
Programming).
 OBD-II => Re-chipping or Re-flashing thru
OBD-II port (Serial Programming), or
programming using BDM Tool (Specific to
Motorola MPC5XX based Processors).
 OBD-II Standards (and Future Standards).
 OBD / II to ECU Protocol Interfacing and
Programming.
 ECU Technology => More Stringent Control
over Emission, thus tighter engine operation
tolerance.
 ECU Maps scrambling.
 Checksum algorithm.
 More efficient engine operation, thus more fuel
efficient => For normal driving behavior, fuel
consumption is LESS.
 More power => Engine is tuned to within its
mechanical potential => More power is
available when needed.
 In plain term: YOUR CAR IS MORE FUN TO
DRIVE!!! ….. And MORE DRIVABLE.
 7% - 15% Horsepower Increase for normally aspirated
(N/A) engine (Depending on how optimized the stock
engine is).
 10% - 15% Torque Increase for N/A engine.
 10% - 50% Horsepower Increase for Forced Induction
(FI) engines, depending on boost level, gasoline or
Diesel engines.
 30% - 75% Torque increase for FI engines, gasoline or
Diesel engines.
 Much better part throttle operations, remove flat spots.
 More torque below peak torque => better drivability.
 Much better passing power from peak torque to
redline.
 Most Cars whose ECUs have separate Data
Chips.
 Usually Bosch and Siemens based and
licensees.
 Additionally: Delphi, Sagem, Marelli, VDO,
etc.
 Why did manufacturers NOT optimize the
ECU in the first Place?
 Will my car consume more fuel?
 Will it void my car warranty?
 Will it shorten the life of my engine?
 Will it have long term negative effect on my
car?
