Objective:

 At the end of the 60-minute period the students will be able to:  

A . Generate the significance of a mother’s love and wisdom as a worthwhile human value as it enhances
substance among the youth which expands their experiences and ideals in life

A. Initial Task

1. Classroom Management “Good Evening Class!”  You may take your seats.

2. Motivation I have here a song entitled “Iingatan Ka” by Carol Banawa, I want you to close your eyes as we
listen to its chorus. Who is being talked about the song?

“Good Evening Ma’am ! -Thank you, Ma’am.  

“Iingatan ka   Aalagaan ka Sa puso ko ikaw ang pag-asa Sa 'ting mundo'y May gagabay sa iyo  Ang alay ko'y
itong pagmamahal ko May nag mamahal aakay sa iyo  Aking inay ikaw ang nagbigay Ng Buhay ko Buhay na
kay ganda Pangarap ko na makamtan ko na”  -

Mother  Teachers Activity Students Activity Okay, I want you to describe your mother by providing words
which starts with:  M O T H E R   What does your/ a mother symbolize? How significant is her role in honing
your individuality? Today, we will discuss a short story that centers on love  –   a topic I’m sure everyone
would be interested at. Well this is a kind of Japanese Folktale entitled “The Story of the Aged Mother”   B.
Lesson Proper   Let us have first the author behind this text that we will discuss.  A) Author Presentation (The
teacher presents an author concept map on the board.) 1. Matsuo Bashō  was born in year 1644 2. He was
recognized as the greatest master of Haikku. 3. He was died at the age of 50y/o. 4. He also wrote Sumidawara
(A Sack of Charcoal) (1694) 5. Matsuo Bashō  was died in November 28, 1694. 6. He was a poet. B) Vocabulary
As we have read the story, we will encounter some difficult words. What we will do is to unlock the meaning
of these following words through the use of context clues present on the following sentences. 1. The poor
farmer loved his aged Mother with tender reverence, and the order filled his heart with sorrow. -  The
students will describe their mother -  (Students volunteers to answer) -  Respect  2. Long, long ago there lived
at the foot of a mountain a poor farmer and his aged, widowed mother. 3. Those were barbarous days, and
the custom of abandoning old people to die was not uncommon. 4. But no one ever thought a second time
about obeying the mandate of a daimio 5. The road was long and steep. 6. He plodded steadily 7. in some
places, they mingled in a confused puzzle, but he gave no heed. 8. the trembling mother’s voice was full of
unselfish love as she gave her injunction. 9. That very hour the cruel law was abolished, and custom drifted
into as far a past that only legend remains. C) Story Discussion Now that we know the difficult words in the
text, we can now start to read the story.  A mother is a symbol of love, unselfishness, and wisdom. In this
story the son reciprocates his mother’s love by doing something that eventually benefits their land.   Let’s
find out what it is.   (The teacher distributes the copies of the  poem.) I will give you 15 minutes to read it
silently and carefully you may now start. So how was the story?  Activity 1 Literary Questions 1. What cruel
proclamation did the daimio make? 2. Where did the son take his mother? What did his mother do along the
way to the mountain? 3. How did the son hide his mother from daimio? 4. Where does the story happen? 5.
Why did the daimio abolish his cruel law? -  old -  savagely cruel -  order -  sharp -  walk doggedly and slowly
with heavy steps -  Attention -  An authoritative warning or order -  Stop -  Students response   For our next
activity I will group you into 3 groups. Can I have the representatives of each group to pick a question from
the box.  Activity 2 Critical Questions 1. If you will be given a chance to change the ending of the story what
would it be? 2. How do you describe the love of a mother? 3. If the present administration proclaimed a law
to abandon your aged mother what will you do?  Activity 3 Individual  Are you guys ready to our next activity?
It is an individual activity I want you to make a letter for your Mother I will be giving you 7 minutes you may
now start. D. Evaluation 1.  The students are tasked to demonstrate how they love and appreciate the love
and wisdom they acquire from their mothers through the following: Group I  –  Role Play Group II  –  Song
Group III  –  Talk Show E. Assignment  I want you to make your own poem for your MOTHER.  Any questions?
