Solid state operation and emergency systems for HID lamps
‘A New Concept in HID Lighting
Transistorized Arc Control (TAC) is.
a revolutionary new solid state
system that provides superior oper-
ation of HID lamps and benefits
never before possible with conven
tional ballasts.
TAC eliminates the heavy coil, core
and oil-filled PCB capacitors _in-
herent to magnetic ballasts. Fix:
tures are smaller and weigh less.
A basic TAC system consists of a
line conditioner for the operation
of up to 30 lamps (depending on
wattage) and a compact lamp
driver for each fixture in the
system,
Line Conditioner
The line conditioner filters out
harmful transients that are poten-
tially damaging to the lamp, con-
verts AC to DC and regulates for
changes in line voltage. Highs
and lows are absorbed to hold
lamp driver branch circuit voltage
at a steady value,
Lamp Driver
The lamp driver regulates for
changes in lamp voltage and
transforms DC to an “ideal” lamp
current,
Built‘in Dimming saves energy
Light levels may be set anywhere
from 2% (depending on lamp
type) to 100% of rated output
from a manually operated control
system. System dimming re-
quires no added equipment. Dim-
ming is smooth, with continuous
response and proportionate re-
duction of input power resulting
in significant energy savings.
In addition to energy savings from
dimmed operation, 10% higher
efficiencies are achieved with
some lamps.
Simple, reliable emergency
systems
The inherent stability of the lamp
driver with a wide range of DC in-
put makes it possible to simply
add a battery supply for compiete-
ly reliable, uninterruptible emer-
gency lighting. All lamps burning
and connected to the battery
back up system at the time of
power outage continue to oper-
ate. In the emergency mode,
lamps operate at low dim, reduc-
ing required battery capacity to
118 (depending on lamp type) of
that required with conventional
systems.
No expensive adders
Because TAC emergency sys-
tems require no expensive in-
verters, high speed static
switches or electromagnetic line

Application
Ideal for offices, classrooms,
hospitals, industrial areas, cor-
ridors, subways, stairways, load:
ing docks, sports, any indoor or
outdoor application where super-
ior lamp operation, built-in dimm-
ing feature, and/or economical
and reliable emergency lighting is
required.
Advantages of solid state
operation
Ideal crest factor. Optimum
lumen maintenance and lamp life.
Silent, strobe-free. Lamp current
is free of DC, offtime, and strobe
frequencies. Stable operation.
Even the most sensitive metal
halide lamps operate smoothly
and reliably. Lamp wattage varia-
tions due to manufacturers toler-
ances are minimized. Drop-out
protection. The TAG line condi-
tioner has sufficient energy
- stored to maintain lamps during a
several cycle momentary power
interruption, such as is some-
times caused by an electrical
storm.

TAC Solid State
Luminaires and Floodlights
For use with TAC Line Conditioners and emergency battery systems. e
TAC lighting fixtures have the
same superior photometrics,
sealed design and quality con-
struction as their conventional
Counterparts, plus all the benefits
of solid state operation. All TAC
fixtures are rated for reliable
operation in ambient tempera
tures up to 65°C. And all are
covered by Wide-Lite’s three-year
limited warranty.
In addition to the fixtures shown
here, TAC capabilities are being
developed for other Wide-Lite
floodlights and luminaires. Con-
sult the factory for fixture avail-
ability, specifications, and photo-
metric data.
