Ampalaya is a fruit, not a vegetable.

This is what we have learned in our Biolog

y 1 class yesterday. Before, I only knew tomato as a fruit that is thought to be
vegetable. No one until yesterday has corrected me that Ampalaya is not a veget
able. Since Kindergarten, it is taught to us as a vegetable.
Fruit vs. Vegetable
To clarify, our Biology teacher, Ms. Eukene Oporto, gave distinction between a f
ruit and a vegetable. A fruit, she said, is a product of fertilization of plants
. It is the edible part, specifically, the ripened ovaries of flowering plants.
Another distinction is that it contains seeds.
On the other hand, a vegetable is a herbaceous plant cultivated for its edible p
art [1] excluding the fruit for some plants. This includes potato (tuber), kangk
ong (leaves), and broccoli (flower).
Brief History
According to our teacher, the dilemma of misconceiving certain fruits as vegetab
les sprouted long time ago when people are not yet scientific like we are now. T
o them, any edible plant that needs to be cooked as a part of a meal's main cour
se are vegetables and those that can just be eaten directly as for dessert or sn
acks are fruits.
Moroever, according to a site named Diffen, "the definition is traditional rathe
r than scientific, so the usage of the word is somewhat arbitrary and subjective
, as it is determined by individual cultural customs." [1]
The Need to Correct
Meanwhile, Ms. Oporto stressed that despite the cultural factor, these things ne
ed to be corrected to avoid confusion as it is also the truth.
Engr. Atanacio Almocera, a scientist and a Physics professor in University of th
e Philippines Cebu College, also emphasized in our Physics class last year that
there are concepts taught in basic education that are misleading. Hence, he said
that it is our duty as "Iskolar ng Bayan" (Scholars of the Nation) to educate t
he people with the right concepts. He added that this can be done in several met
hods; the more creative, the more effective just like what we did in his class w
here we produced instructional videos.

Now that we know Ampalaya is indeed a fruit, how about Malunggay (Moringa Oleife
ra)? Or about Baguio beans? ^^,

350 parts per million is the most important number in the world as scientists sa
y it is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere.
Recently, we have 389.69 ppm according to Mauna Loa Observatory (December 2010).
Thus, 350.org, as an international campaign, builds a movement to unite the worl
d in bringing back CO2 concentration to 350.
In October 2010 we organized a 'global work party' all over the world, with over
7000 events in 187 countries. People put up solar panels, dig community gardens a
nd sent a strong message to our leaders: 'If we can get to work on solutions to
the climate crisis, so can you.'
Our theory of change is simple: if an international grassroots movement holds ou
r leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global tra
nsformation we so desperately need.
So, if you want to be part of the movement and of the history, join 350.org Cebu
