On the 3rd of June 1868 J. C. Linehan and John Thornton, on the part of the Catholics of
Fisherville, bargained for and purchased of Ira Sweatt, who acted for the Methodist Episcopal
Society, the church owned by them, for the sum of $2,050, which amount was to be paid them on or
before the first of September 1867. Of that amount, $985 was collected from the congregation by
Rev Father Barry and the balance of $1,00 was borrowed of John L. Tallant and the whole paid
over to Mr Sweat; and their account was accordingly settled on the 20th of September 1867. The
time on the money borrowed of Mr. Talent, was one year from September 20th and the rate of
interest 7.3% per Annum, which amount was paid in installments and finally settled November 9th,
1868. There not being enough collected by $150 when Mr. Tallant’s note became due, that amount
was procured of Messrs. Barron Dodge & Co. Flour dealers Concord, N. H., who kindly lent it at a
time when it was almost impossible to get it elsewhere for one month from November 9th, at the
rate of 6% interest. And which was paid back to them on the 23rd of the same month being two
weeks from the time borrowed -- this balancing all accounts and commencing the new year free
from debt -- the whole amount expended from June 3rd 1867 to November 23rd 1868 was
$2,185.68.
