This manual describes the installation for the ProfiCore PROFIBUS to USB interface for various
operating systems.
The next chapters assume basic knowledge of Windows operating systems. All example and dialogs
are based on a US/UK based windows installation and may differ slightly based on upgrades, updates
and enhancements.
If the PC on which the installation is performed, please use the dialog screen captures shown in this
document in conjunction with the description in order to find and press the appropriate buttons and
other user interface items.
Make sure that before installing the drivers or any other relating applications the following is verified or
done:
Connect the ProfiCore USB device to the PC with the supplied USB cable.
Windows XP will detect the presence of a new USB device and will automatically come up with a
dialog similar to the one shown below.
Select the item 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)' and then press the 'Next' button.
Now Windows XP will load and install the drivers for the ProfiCore. If the following dialog appears,
during the installation phase then press the 'Continue Anyway' button to proceed.
The green led on the ProfiCore (to the left of the USB connector) should now be lit, as shown in the
picture below.
Connect the ProfiCore USB device to the PC with the supplied USB cable.
Windows 2000 will detect the presence of a new USB device and will automatically come up with a
dialog similar to the one shown below.
In the dialog that follows (see below), select only the item 'Specify a location' and then press the
'Next' button.
Windows 2000 will report that a driver for the ProfiCore has been found is ready to install it. Press the
'Next' button in order for Windows 2000 to perform the installation procedure.
The green led on the ProfiCore (to the left of the USB connector) should now be lit, as shown in the
picture below.
Connect the ProfiCore USB device to the PC with the supplied USB cable.
Windows 98 will detect the presence of a new USB device and will automatically come up with a
dialog similar to the one shown below.
In the dialog that follows (shown below), select only the item 'Specify a location''. Use the 'Browse'
button and select the 'drivers' directory on the installation CD. After having done that press the 'Next'
button.
After the installation of the drivers are finished the following dialog should appear, indicating that the
installation was successful.
This chapter has answers to frequently asked questions about ProfiCore and related matters.
Question Answer
1.1 I have USB 2.0 on my laptop/PC, does Yes, ProfiCore is USB V1.1 and will also work on
ProfiCore work on that also ? USB 2.0 hubs and interfaces without problems
1.2 Can I connect more than 2 ProfiCore ProfiCore consumes approximately 250mA. One
devices on one port (with a hub) ? USB port can only supply 500mA in total. Using 2
ProfiCore devices on the same port may not work
properly since it will probably exceed the 500mA
USB current limit. It is therefor recommended to
have each ProfiCore on it's own port.
1.3 Is ProfiCore galvanically isolated ? Yes, the Profibus RS485 port is galvanically
isolated.
1.4 The ProfiCore also has a RJ45 The TJ45 connector is NOT an Ethernet
connector, what is it used for ? connector, but a feature connector for extending
the functionality of applications using the
ProfiCore.
The ProfiTrace bus analyzer application for
example uses this port to generate a trigger
signal for oscilloscopes. This trigger signal is
used to trigger the capture for an oscilloscope
exactly at the moment a particular message is
detected on the bus. This simplifies bus signal
quality analysis for individual stations on the bus.
1.5 Can I use the ProfiCore DB9 Profibus Yes, but be aware of the fact that when a PC (or
connector also for terminating the laptop) needs to be reset or shutdown, also the
Profibus network ? power for the termination resistors is shutdown!
The same occurs when removing the ProfiCore
from the USB port!
1.6 Does ProfiCore support all baudrates ? Yes, ProfiCore can support all baudrates up to
12Mbps, including 45.45kbps. However the
application on the PC will determine the
functionality (see also 1.7).
1.7 Is ProfiCore a Profibus Master or Slave? ProfiCore has all the hardware built-in for usage
as either a master, slave or just for passive bus
analysis. The actual functionality is determined by
the application used on the PC.
If you experience problems during installation or usage of ProfiCore, the associated tools or
applications, then first make sure you have done and verified the issues as mentioned in chapter 1.
Also be aware that only Windows 98, Windows XP and Windows 2000 have been tested with
ProfiCore. Usage on other operating systems, may not work or not work properly, and no support can
be given for it.
