C. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson

During the campaign period for the national elections, you most certainly hear
candidates talking about their platforms and their plans for the country if they are
elected. Even in the student council elections in your school, the same thing is also
conducted. All these people want their voters to see the improvements they want to
implement, so that the latter can decide if they are worth the vote. In the academic
and professional setting, an institution or agency is able to decide whether a certain
project or research is worth the investment through the concept paper.

♦WHAT IS A CONCEPT PAPER?

Prior to the submission of a project proposal, proponents are requested to submit a

summary of what the project is all about, the reasons for conducting the project, and how it
will be carried out. This summary document is called concept paper. A concept paper
provides an overview of the project, and helps funding agencies eliminate proposals that are
likely to be disapproved. Hence, it helps save time and effort for both the proponents and the
funding agencies.

A concept paper has several uses:

 It serves as a foundation of the full proposal.

 It helps determine whether a certain project is feasible or not.
 It is used to pique the interest of the potential funding agencies.
 It is used to obtain informal feedback on the ideas prior to preparing the full
proposal.
Since a concept paper is preliminary document for a proposal, it shows a preview of
the improvements that the proponent would like to have implemented. Concept papers can
be helpful in addressing social issues especially since they aim to show solutions to tangible
issues which plague society.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

♦THREE WAYS IN EXPLAINING A CONCEPT

Before writing your concept paper, you have to learn how to explain your concept
first. You can accomplish this using definition, explication, or clarification.

1. DEFINITION is the method of identifying a given term and making its meaning
clearer. Its main purpose is o clarify and explain concepts, ideas, and issues by
answering the question, “What does it mean?” This mode of explanation contains the
terms to be defined and the detailed exposition of the term through the use of
illustrations, examples, and description.

A definition can be presented in three ways: informal, formal, or extended.

i. An informal definition is done through a parenthetical or brief explanation.
Eample: Tocopherol (Vitamin E) is naturally found in vegetable oil, fish, and
nuts.

ii. A formal definition explains a term by incorporating the term to be defined

(species), the general category of the term (genus), and the quality that
makes the term different from other terms in the same category (differentia).
Example: Vitamin E is a light yellow fat-soluble vitamins that act as an anti-
oxidant.

iii. An extended definition is a detailed way of defining a term and is usually

composed of at least one paragraph. This type of definition incorporates
various pattern of development (e.g., formal and informal definition,
comparison and contrast, narration, description, functional analysis, process,
analogy, and cause and effect) to explain a given concept.
Example: Subsequent to materials, design is the preparation of learning
materials. Learning materials refer to both printed and non-printed objects or
items that teachers and learners use to facilitate language learning.
Nowadays, materials are becoming more and more sophisticated,
incorporating authentic language samples and realias that help make a
connection between classrooms and real-life activities. They also incorporate
information and communication technology (ICT), role-plays, information-gap
activities, songs, taped transcripts, integrated macroskills, and explicit rubrics.

To better present ideas, you should identify the important elements contained in a
definition. These include the term being defined, the detailed explanation, and the specific
examples. The following signal words will help you in writing this kind of text.

Signal Words for Definition

As defined For instance Means To define
For example Is defined as Such as To illustrate

2. EXPLICATION is a method of explanation in which sentences, verses, quotes, or

passages are taken from a literary or academic work and then interpreted and
explained in a detailed way. When using this technique, you need to clearly present
your thesis in the introduction and follow it up with a detailed analysis of a passage or
text. You may begin the body of the explication by analyzing and explaining how the
text was constructed. Your explication should end with a concise conclusion by
restating your thesis and major arguments.
3. CLARIFICATION is a method of explanation in which the points are organized from a
general abstract idea to specific and concrete examples and specifying some of its
characteristics to arrive at one working definition which can be used throughout the
paper.
The following signal words will help in writing this kind of text.

Signal Words for Clarifications

After all For instance Namely That is
As an example In other words Put another way To be specific
Consider the In particular Specifically To clarify
following In short Stated differently To illustrate
For example

F. Developing mastery

G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

Why is it important to have a clear explanation of a topic?

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

•Concept Paper - A brief overview of the research topic, including a summary of what is
already known about that topic.\

Three Ways in Explaining a Concept

1. Definition
A definition can be presented in 3 ways:
a. Formal definition
b. Informal definition
c. Extended definition
2. Explication
3. clarification

I. Evaluating learning
Activity 1: Read the following definitions; notice whether each one is a formal, informal, or
extended definition. The term being defined appears as bold.

_____________1. When my friend Katrice was young, she disobeyed her parents near
Christmas. I don't recall the crime, but I do recall the consequence. When she woke up on
Christmas morning, there were no presents for her under the tree from "Santa Claus." To
make matters worse, she had to watch her younger siblings open all their presents in front of
her. Santa did not come for Katrice that year because she was on the "naughty list." While
her parents may well still stand by their decision, Katrice maintains that she was the victim

of cruel and unusual punishment. I tend to agree, as it seems that the consequences were
too drastic for any child, no matter how naughty she may have been.

_____________2. Many prisoners of war have been victims of cruel and unusual
punishment; people were shocked and horrified when they learned of the water torture,
temperature extremes, and sensory overloads that the prisoners were subjected to.

_____________3. The Cornell University Law School website defines cruel and unusual
punishment (noun) as "punishment that is extremely excessive in relation to the crime,
shocking to ordinary sensibilities, or equivalent to torture."

_____________4. Bullying is a verb that describes the act of forcing someone to do

something he or she does not want to do. Typically, the bully uses physical power or
influence to intimidate the person being bullied.

_____________5. Once upon a time, bullying in schools only referred to the students who
forced the smaller students to give up their lunch money or the ones who beat them up after
school. In recent years, many schools have cracked down on bullying and have strict zero-
tolerance policies. In fact, a student was recently disciplined for biting a Pop-Tart into the
shape of gun. However, now harassment is often happening online. Real bullies hide behind
social media technology, like Facebook, posting embarrassing pictures and videos of their
classmates and setting up fake relationships to lead on and shame others, an act known as
catfishing.

_____________6. Bullying occurs when someone uses his or her power or prestige to

intimidate and terrorize another person. At times, the bully pushes someone around to get
something specific from that person, but at other times, the bully simply is mean just to
watch the other person squirm. Tormenting anyone for any reason is inappropriate and
should not be tolerated.

J. Additional activities for application or remediation

Think of one concept related to any of the following fields: Art, Business, Law,
Philosophy, Politics, religion, Science, Sports, Home Economics, Agriculture, Fishery,
Industrial Arts, Information, and Communication Technology.

Explain your chosen concept using definition, explication, or clarification. Your

explanation must be at least words and at most 300 words.
