Three general categories (Fraenkel & Wallen, 1996; David, 2005)

1. Descriptive Research
 Answers the questions what, when, where and how.
 Describes a situation or a given state of affairs in terms of specific aspects or factors.
 Describes the characteristics of groups, physical environment or condition.

 Also called explanatory research since relationship between factors or variables are assumed to
contribute to the existence to a problem or condition
 Attempts to explain the possible factors related to a problem which have been observed in a
descriptive study.
 Answers the questions why and how
 Determines the factors which are associated with or may contributed to the occurrence of the
problem

3. Experimental or Intervention
 Evaluates the outcome or effect of a particular intervention or treatment.
 Studies the “cause and effect” between certain factors on a certain phenomenon under controlled
situations
 Subjects of the study are randomly assigned to the experimental group and control group; both
groups are exposed to similar conditions except for the intervention treatment.
